Does everyone have a darn 14ff/d60!!!!

I did the donor truck thing... Yarded the d60/14bff with 4:56s out and threw my 4:10 3/4 ton stuff under the donor truck... Free 1 tons...:D

Here's a question. Are these off-road only rigs or do any of you use them as dailies? D60/14FF guys would be fine but some of you guys running 14FF/14FF or Rockwell axles must use them for off-road only. That would be an awful lot of unsprung weight to have to lug around with today's gas prices.

Good question!

I can't speak for any of the other members on this site, but My Sub and My Wife's Fargo are comfy daily drivers.

No problem doing 70mph down the hwy either.:D
Didn't built them to compete with a Prius.:haha:

We love driving them, and often argue who is driving what rig if we are going out.

As mentioned in another thread, we drove from Ontario Canada, down to Moab this past May to spend a week driving around the desert and then drove them back home. 5000 mile round trip x 2 trucks.

Some of the awesome looking and extremely well built Truggies on here would not make it far on Canadian roads in Ontario before being pulled over.

Mine is a daily driver as well. Usually don't do much over 70 MPH. The only thing I had to do for better handling was hydro assist steering. Granted, most modified rigs wont handle as well as the factory design, but still comfortable enough to haul my family around in.

Axles.

Is that because of the lack of body panels? lol

What axles are you running?

The Wife's Power Wagon is D-60 front with an OX locker, 14bolt FF rear with a Detroit and 4;10's
Sub is D-60 front with an ARB locker, 14bolt FF rear with a Detroit and 5:13's
My 60 also has the 35 spline outters and CTM U joints.

All 4 have had the yokes upgraded to 1410 joints with saddle bolts.

Incorporated every bit of advise I was given, for a tough drivetrain.

Well to start, this is a great forum and i've learned so much with interaction with some of the knowledgeable people on here. I currently have an 89' k5 that has your typical suspension mods (shackle flip in rear, springs and zero rate, and etc etc) and even have a cv rear shaft. I currently run 37's on the 10 bolts:eek1:. I do have a 14sf in my garage that i havnt got around to messing with yet, but plan to when funds are right along with some regearing.

My question is, does EVERYONE really have the 14ff/d60??? I know its a bullet proof combo, but damn, everyone and their moma seems to have them. My current 10bolts have a little $$ in them and have been fine (knock on wood) for a long time. I mean, if u rock crawl every weekend thats one thing, but for normal driving and occasional dirt/mud offroad, is it really needed?? Maybe its different for me since i live in eastern North Carolina, but is there anyone still running 10 bolts or just 14sf??

I used to have 10 bolts in my blazer....but I had an overheating issue and came on here to get help.....next thing I know, hell, check out the build thread. vvvvvvv

My blazer with the 60/14 combo is a trail only rig... 44s, propane, full hydro, narrowed, doved, bobbed, full cage...

My k20 is a dd with a 10/14 8 lug combo... 33s, 4" lift, air bags... No need for axle upgrades imo...

The K10 Shortbed has a 10/14 6 lug combo... 36s, 6" lift... It's not a dd but won't do any major wheeling other than a little mud or snow and logging roads...

It all depends on what the rig is used for... I don't see any reason to go with 1 tons unless it's wheeled hard or has huge tires... Don't get me wrong, if a pair of 1 tons fell in my lap, I'd use them under a lighter duty rig... But I wouldn't go out and pay to upgrade axles under a truck that doesn't warrant them...

I've been DDing a Rockwelled rig the last few weeks.

I drive my gmc most of the time. Leaf springs and d60/14b. Pretty pleasant to drive.
My dodge has the 9.25 Aam front and 11.5 Aam rear.

I like big rear ends.

Pretty safe to say we have probably answered the OP's question about D60's and 14FF's. They are not a must, but damn sure are nice to have. Funny he hasn't posted up since making this thread. :dunno:

The term "drinking from a fire hose" comes to mind.............:D

Sometimes the level of information about some subjects can be a little intimidating.

Glad I'm not the only one to notice that.

Glad to see ur "checking on that.":waytogo: Does it really matter if i reposted? i was just interested in what everyone else had and if it worked for them. Definetly good responses though

Wouldn't say it was "crucial" to repost by any means.
My comment was only an observation, not meant negatively.
No response sort of leaves the individuals who contributed wondering if you got what you wanted out of it or not.

I was curious wether you may have been frustrated or as the other member mentioned "intimidated" by the volume of info that resulted from your question.

At least you know those who respond pay attention to the thread.

Definetly not frustrated. Actually the opposite. Lots of valuable information on here that I'm glad people shared. I also dont get a chance to get on this forum as often as I would like, only maybe a couple nights a week. The only thing that does slightly agitate me is when comments might get made about a post or member that sounds negative, even not knowing the them. Afterall, aren't we all after the same thing, to gain knowledge and insight through a growing forum.

I have a Dana 60/14bff under my 1982 K30 3+3, my 1988 V10 Suburban, and my 1990 K5 Blazer. My 1987 V10 pickup has 10 bolts yet, and my 1985 K5 had a Dana44/14bff combo.

I have broke too many parts on my Dana 60 in my Blazer to even think about half ton axles being sufficient.

Martin

Also, spending money to regear weak half ton axles makes no sense to me. I can buy three quarter tons with decent gears for less than the price of two ring an pinions usually.

That's the thing, just like the other thread... Gears may not seem to expensive, but you add an install kit and paying to have them set up and it adds up quick x2... Most guys don't know how to set up gears and don't think about that cost...
