how come there is 4 holes in the cover and only 2 in the gear? I really wanna buy some, but this has kind of got me puzzled.

The cover doesn't attach to the gear....just the ring. The gear holes are only to aid extraction. A floating gear is better. Order quick we sold almost half our stock today.

Those look great. I can see how the cover attaches but if a floating slug is better then how are you preventing the axle from walking inboard and allowing water and dirt to enter the spindle area past the seal that needs to be held tight against the spindle?

A snap ring.

I understand that you use a snap ring on the end of the stub axle but if the slug floats there is nothing to keep the axle from moving inboard. Now i can see if you have to find the original large spring that was used with a factory slug that it would work but you make no mention of needing one and it wouldn't be easy to locate one either.

The snap ring on the stub is optional. I don't use them. There are no limits to how anal you want to get with axles. Bottom line...this is a long time proven method. By the time you read this we will probably be sold out. :wink1:

Like i said, nice looking product. If you believe for one minute that the snap ring on the axle stub is optional then you are highly mistaken. If they were optional why did the factory install them on every axle that left the factory? Also that is what keeps tension on the stub axle against the seal for the spindle.

most flanges I have seen (only exception I can think of are the poly perf ones) aren't thick enough for the snap ring to help put tension on anything. There is about 2" of splined-depth for a slug to fit in, and most slugs are like an inch thick. How is a snap ring on the end of the stub going to add "tension" to anything? I mean, you can put one there, but I don't see it really doing much of anything.

Have you ever pulled apart a fulltime front axle with slugs in it? If you have you will notice that there is a very large spring that pushes against the backside of the slug which in turn pushes against the snap ring which in turn pulls the axle outboard to keep tension on the seal against the spindle.

Maybe people haven't seen the way it is from the factory or the fulltime axles people have taken apart had already been into and someone removed parts but i can get you picks of the spring and also the cup washer that the spring sits in if you want.

Yep, I'll agree with this. When I tore apart my full time axle to put manual hubs on, right behind the slug is a big spring that pushed against the slug which pushed into the snap ring.

I think koldsimer had to make something for his slugs becaust the axle would move in and the yokes would hit the tube. Makes nice sparks at night.
