I am finally finished with the dual swing away rear bumper I've been building so I thought I would post some pictures for everyone. The build was much easier than I expected (thanks to buying a plasma cutter and chop saw) and all in all I think I spent just under 400 bucks on materials.
Thanks guys! Its certainly better than carrying the spare inside the truck, hahahahaha.
As for spindles, I used the AtoZ fabrication ones. For the tire swing away I used the heavy duty version and for the jerry swing away I used the standard version. They are very well made and the swing aways glide with practically no friction.
The bumper looks good. It's a little late now but I would have brought the bumper mount brackets through the tube for the added strength and also as a shackle point. Here is a pic of the rear bumper I built.
Damn, that would have been a good idea! I am actually thinking of adding some gussets between the brackets and the body for a little extra strength. I came down on a couple rocks pretty hard two weekends ago in Tahoe (deer valley) and it held up fantastic but some extra strength would never hurt.
Make sure everything is really rigid when the carrier is latched. Try to keep an eye on the spindle for cracking above the welds. Hopefully you'll be able to see it before the spindle snaps off. I'm sure weight is a big factor. I got a few years with a 35, but not too long after I hung the H1 wheel/tire back there, it was done.
