I'm getting some noise from my TC when I let off. I want to first check the fluid, but I've never done that. Is it like a manual trans? Just fill level to the fill hole?
What type of fluid does the 241 take? I need to pick up some on the way home.

Yep just fill it to the top hole. Tranny fluid is the beverage of choice for the 241.

What kind of noise. Grinding, clunking???

Just whining....and a bit of rattling.
No grinding or clunking.
Sounds like a loose chain might be flopping around.

Anybody got a link to the rebuild? I guess I just jack up the rear of the truck, remove the drive shafts and pull her out, correct? Should be a pretty straight forward rebuild...I would think.

Make sure it's just not a u-joint in the driveshaft!

Does the sound change if you are in 2wd vs. 4wd? In 2wd with hubs unlocked I don't believe the chain will move.

When I pull it out of 4WD it stops. But the hubs are still locked.
I haven't used 4WD much in this truck, but the snow just started.

I have no idea what's going on now.
Hubs locked, not in 4WD, it doesn't make the sound.
In 4WD, Hubs not locked, it doesn't make the sound.
Only makes the sounds in 4WD and with Hubs locked.

It's got a 4" lift with 33's, and a dropped TC so the angles are pretty tame. I'm not sure how I check for UJoint wear except to try to move the drive shafts. Gotta be the front right?

The only thing I notice when I try to wiggle the shafts is that they're is some play in the front shaft...but not at the joint....but at the compression/splined part of the front shaft.

Any ideas?

That could be it. Does the slip joint have play along the length of the shaft (prolly a bad u-joint) or perpendicular to the shaft (bad spline joint)? You may also have a bent front drive shaft. If it doesn't make noise with the front spinning free (hubs lock or t-case in 4WD, but not both), but does when applying torque (hubs locked and t-case in 4WD), I would think it is a driveshaft issue.

The way to check the U-joints---
Put it in neutral, get under the truck, grab the yoke on the driveline and wiggle the piss out of it. If it has ANY play at the u-joint (not the slip) then you have bad joints. The slip will have some play....but not much.

Have you also checked the bolts on the flange?

Pull the front shaft and see if the noise is now gone. This is also the perfect time to check the joints easily with the shaft out. Also have you ground out the stops on the CV joint? Even with the smallest lift on these later trucks and the CV will bind on the stops in the CV if you don't grind them out.

I put some grease in the front shaft and it really tightened up the shaft. I haven't test driven the truck yet, so who knows if this helps or not.

The truck has been the same way for some time, so the binding or drive line angles seem to be unlikely issues. It's more like something is wearing out.

Since it doesn't happen unless the hubs are locked AND the TC is in 4WD, it's got to be a torque issue right? So pulling the driveshaft wouldn't help eliminate the problem...I don't think. Remember, it doesn't do it w/the TC in 4wd only or with the hubs locked only. It's only about 45 MPH with 4WD fully engaged.

TC is full of fluid and looks good. Front diff is full and looks good. Wiggled the front drive shaft as hard as possible and it feels fine. I have no idea what's up. Maybe lubing it up will help.

Adding grease won't be a permanent fix if you have excess play, but may help point to where the problem is.

sounds like maybe the spline is going bad ont he front driveshaft i know mine was like that then last time i locked into 4x4 i just heard a slight grinding noise and realized that it was my front shaft turing inside the yokes splines.

I read your post, but I still think it is angles. Mine sounded like it was about to blow apart. I put in a HAD shaft and it is all better. For a pretty quick check, throw in a set of shims and see if it changes. Or remove the Tcase drop kit and see what happens. A tcase drop will make the front angle worse.
