ESC computer necessary in an 81 k5... computer gurus

Is the electronic spark computer actually necessary in an 81 k5,,,, anyone know if it can still pass ca. emssions if it isnt hooked up (ie gone),,, techs dont look under the dash.... and what function does it take care of that the distributor cant....

The ESC computer on an 81 will just detect knocks in the motor and retard the timing. That is its only function as far as I know. It shouldn't make a difference in the emissions. I live in Phoenix and we have emissions also and my 85 passed easily without the ESC computer hooked up.
