Everyday shops don't do squares anymore

I'm just looking for someone to do wheel bearing type stuff -- your shop is overkill for that and the local oil lube isn't enough. I'd never considered there'd be a day when I'm the only person I can find that knows how to work on these and I can't afford to take the time off. Last week I got pulled over for not wearing a seatbelt, the CHP dude was in his 20s and was the first time he'd ever seen a lap-belt equipped vehicle: spent most of his time asking about the truck. F*cking twilight zone.
I know it's a drive for you but The Rear-end shop in Santa Rosa is very good and very good rates. They have worked on 4 of my squares and my nova

I feel your pain...just got done posting a request for someone who can work on my T-case. Seems like many times, you have to do stuff yourself because no one can or will do stuff right. I would have loved to have someone figure out my rear shock mounts for me, but no one was willing...I did have one place say they could do it, but after countless calls trying to set up a time, I realized they really weren't interested in fabrication on such a small scale. They wanted to replace the whole rear suspension and link it all up...for way more money than I had. Good luck! I guess times are changing, and somehow I became one of the "old guys" ....

Knock ‘em if you want but my brother in law and I have had good luck with the semi local four wheel parts for maintenance and general mechanicing. Wouldn’t ask them to do a restore job but for bearings and gearing and suspension they’ve been great.

I got pulled over in the old scout about 15 years ago... leaving the gun show (back before they were getting banned and there was actually a gun show 2wice a year in the OC area)
-anyway, leaving the parking lot in a 1962 scout with no top ,total of 4 people in it , and the windshield was in the folded down position...

Thank God it was the local PD and not CHP...

Cop says: "none of you are wearing seatbelts"
me: "how can you see that from outside the vehicle?"
cop: " -your shoulder belts..."
me : "if this thing had shoulder belts, what would they attach to?"
cop : "looks like you are not wearing the lap belts either... (he starts pulling out the ticket book)
Me : "so, when my vehicle was built... this is a 1962, and the vehicle predates all of the mandates by 3 or for years? Yes, it would be smart to have them, but I have not been able to bring myself to drill extra holes in a car this cool"
cop : -silence/thinking...
cop : "YOU GUYS IN THE BACK NEED TO SIT DOWN ON THE FLOOR OF THE BED... -Have a nice day"

as soon as he left I told my friends "I thought for sure I was getting a ticket - how did he not bring up the folded down windshield, or fact that you guys in the back DONT EVEN HAVE SEATS?!"

and yes, in general, down here in So cal, there are plenty of places that "will do wheel bearings", but to them, that means non serviceable, unitized hubs that come out of the box and attach with 3 bolts...

we end up with 2 choices:
1) do it yourself
2) start asking all your friends if there is a local tiny shop that will do it... and at that point, there is always someone hungry for the work, but you gamble they wont damage something or forget to stake a clip or cotter pin...

I used to have ONE place down here i would recommend... but that was a while ago, and before one of their new hires was allowed to change the oil in my friend's LX450, and his hand tight oil plug fell out of the pan less than a block away from their driveway...

Wow, surprised that finding shops for easy jobs is such an issue. I could drop off a square at easily 6 different shops in town for wheel bearings or similar jobs and have no issues. I just do it myself, shop rates are too high these days.
