2000 OBS SFA SWAP-CAMPER/TOW RIG: USING AND ABUSING

As I get closer to digging into my crew cab and thinking more about future camping/wheeling trips, I am starting to get some ideas and directions in mind.

The truck will be SFA swapped on 285's. Good clearance for mild trails and exploration.

I will still be towing my Jimmy here and there for events, as well as just the truck with camper by itself.

With the thought process of K.I.S.S. (Keep it simple stupid), I am wanting to be able to tow/camp/explore all with one setup(truck, trailer, camper).

My initial thought was a longer goose neck with a pop-up camper or slide in camper bolted to the front, and the rig behind it. But the more I think about it, I would like a more simple setup while not having the Jimmy in-tow on a camping only trip(much like Beags' recent trip).

My question is, would a slide-in truck bed camper and a bumper pull trailer with the Jimmy on it be too much or unsafe for long distance travel?

This is something local that I had in mind for the slide-in camper.

This is the truck base. Ignore the 4x4 rear, and lowrider front stance. Truck has been corrected, but will soon ride slightly higher with the SFA swap.

I don't see how that'd be too much. One thing I will say. Get air bags for the rear. God that makes such a huge difference in towing. With the camper even more so.

Bags are necessity IMO with that kind of weight.

What gears are in the rear? Those may need to be swapped out if you're in the hills much. I assume you're going with a D60 up front?

Yes, HP 60 up front. Truck already has 4.10's in it. With 285's that should be more than enough.

Sounds like a good plan to me. If you have the jimmy you can set up the tow truck as the "base camp" and get around the area with the jimmy.

That's another aspect of the entire setup that we would like. Mainly for trips like Blazer Bash, and some other local events.

Subscribed for awesomeness!

I sure hope so:doah:

Talked with the wife some more last night, as well as showed her some trip reports. She said that's something she always wanted to do as a kid.

Also lower ball joint is shot on the drivers side of the Crew Cab, makes me wish that axle was under it already. I would rather be replacing a ball joint on that instead of wasting money on this ifs:doah:

Picked up some buckets and a center console for this yesterday from work. Should be a little more user friendly and a little more comfortable.

My question is: Since the truck has a bench up front, are the bolts/provisions there for the possible use of bucket seats? Or am I going to be drilling holes?

I'm going from memory here, but I believe that the 60/40 front bench and the bucket/console/bucket from the same years use the same mounting holes in the cab floor.

I did bench to buckets like you got years ago .

the support plate/threaded nut is already there on the under side . just got to pop the hole and maybe clean the treads up a little first .

but factory stuff can very . . . and almost 10year old info in my head now.

I just need to lay under the truck and see what's under there.

IDK if it's been mentioned already, but if you want ideas for your rig check out the Expedition Portal website. They have homebuilt rigs from all over the world.

I've heard, and I've even snooped a bit. Not sure why, but new websites confuse the crap out of me, and are hard to navigate. I need to mess with it more for sure.
