One of our best wheeling spots (the PEAKS) is getting closed by the tree huggers

The land that we wheel at is BLM land there is nothing out there but sage brush and dirt. people have been wheeling out there for ever, and yes we tear it up a bit but then we get a good rain and everything goes back to the way it was
only we haven't had a real good rain for a few years and it is looking worse and worse. Now they want to stop us from going out there.

Their reasoning for shutting it down is to preserve the natural resources but there ISN'T any the only thing there is out there besides dirt and sage brush is the wild horses but they are on the other side of the mountain.

I know that a lot of you have dealt with this in your area so I am hoping you can offer some tips on how to fight this

They are having a meeting about it on the 26'th. our local 4x4 club is going to it hoping to change there minds

there are a lot of people that use the land for different reasons like hunting horse riding 4 wheeling ext.
We need as much help as we can get from all of you because if they close this one then pretty soon they will close all of our wheeling spots

this seems to be a running theme. The tree huggers see one or two iresponsible wheelers and then all of us are bad then it snowballs from there and they get the land clossed.

Are you a member of www.ufwda.org or the local regional assoc?

Do you keep an eye on your local FS/BLM doings?

Stuff like this has a process but it's up to you to watch for rulings that are going to effect trails. Basicly this closing process has probably been going on for a year or more but you were ignorant of it because you have not been watching your local BLM/FS websites or keeping in regular contact with them or joining their FREE mailing lists that all tell you when proposed changes are going on.

Sorry but at this point I am going to use you as an example of how and why we loose trails.

IGNORANCE to due process. The BLM is not going to knock on your door and ask if you use the land and how you use it.

A group or even a person can recomend a closure and then it goes through due process and a comment period that you apparently didn't even know was happening. The typical workings is at the coment period they hear both sides of the issues and go from there. Basicly nobody on our side showed so guess who wins?

This is why folks show up and find closed signs because YOU have to be proactive and stay involved. The GAG are aware of peoples ignorance to how things work and this is EXACTLY how they got the upper hand. They go in get involved and there is nobody on our side giving the opposite veiws.

My recomendations is hit your local rangers office today and find out whats going on, get the URL for the local BLM/FS and check out their "Scoping" letters. These will tell you of proposals, planed work including trail maintance, burns, closings, comment periods, etc.

Tomorrow joing a club that is a member of the local Assoc OR join as a private member. Then you can work as a group and when they want to do something in you sworm in with numbers of what you want done. The sick thing is there was only proably 4-5 GAG's that got this going but no wheelers so they win. /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif
