First brake job... Going Back Together

its just as easy to use a brass drift to get it back in
freeze your races prior to install, it makes them 1/2 an @ss hair smaller in diameter and it helps

Good call, it's been so long I forgot that trick.

Well despite the probs I have to say I'm having a blast. Between learning something new, and for the first time ever working in a proper garage (new house) with lighting, space and all my tools in one place it has been FUN!

Thanks again for all the help guys!

Hope you don't have a 1977 Dana 44. I found out the hard way that there are 2 different sets of bearings for this year. Some 44's had the normal sized bearings and some came with larger bearings. Best bet is to pop out the old races and have your parts place match the numbers.

:D I did just that! I didn't want to bother getting any more wrong parts. Thanks again.

Do you still have the old seals? they probably have P/Ns on them that will lead you to something at least

As for the gasket, just use RTV, its only there to stop water incursion into hub, so RTV is actually better at this than a paper gasket

The seal is the only part without a number on it. :doah:

I was going to ask about the RTV, that's what I'll do thanks!

Well I found the seal but it is missing the flange. Everything else looks to be identical. What do you think should I use it? Or keep searching?

As long as the seal fits snugly in the hub and the inner rubber is the same size, then your good to go. I have both types on mine.

You do? That's reassuring the parts guy told me it was the same but they NEVER know what they're talking about. I couldn't see any differences other than that so maybe I'll throw them in.

It's a National 416273 for reference sake.

Oil Seal Found!

Finally got the right seal. I decided with my luck so far not to dick around with the one without the lip.

Replace?

I found that one of the spindle nuts is missing the pin that the spacer fits around. I this important? Should I replace it? Thanks again.

That pin is what keeps the spindle nut from backing off. On one of my earlier K5's I had one missing. Always made me nervous that it would loose and munch my wheel bearings. I'd replace it.

Sure you got the right nut in the right place? I've put the one with the pin in backwards once. And yes that pin is critical, it is what keeps the nut from backing out.

hehe thanks guys, I guess that would explain why I could spin the nuts off by hand!

That said I could do so on both sides, they were NOT even hand tight yet you couldn't tell.

Oh boy, more part numbers to hunt down...

Yeah It's definitely sheared off.

Thanks for the link, I've got both the GM parts and the Ford ratcheting nut coming too. I'll check them out and see what happens.

Now I need a couple of the press fit studs that go through the knuckle and hold the spindle on. One was replaced with a bolt and nut (that was fun to remove) and another is nearly rusted through :eek1:.

Any leads on these would be GREATLY appreciated. Something tells me it won't be easy. And junk yards here don't have stuff that old...

I've been taking lots of pics and will do a write up including all part numbers when all is done.
