What would be your first upgrade to a stock 400 small block ???
A complete tune-up first. A carb rebuild. Then I would go with an aluminum intake. Then a cam.
The list could be endless so I'll stop for now.
I'd have to go w/ aluminum intake (the stock intake weighs around 50#) and headers
I was thinking starting off with a set of Hooker headers.
well i would go for a lift on yours lol..if the engine runs good and all all ready..i would wait on that upgrade..and focas more on my lift and that stuff! i havre a lot of body wokr to do on mine..i just discovered tonight how bad my rear floor was..have to replace that.. tailpan and tailgate!
I'm already planning on a 6" BDS suspension lift along with a 1" ORD body lift. Just waiting for the new credit card to come in so I can run the bill up !!! LOL .
HEHEH sounds sweet man!..well i have to replace my rear tail gate..floor and tailpan! yAAYY LOL..and the two fornt floor bourds as well...oh boy..o wel what can i do!?..got a new tialgate allready..,just need the guts for it!when its done though..i will fell so great! good luck on your lift and other mods..i myself..after getting it mechanicly and bodily sound...am planning on liek a 4" procomp or rancho lift..with some 35" BFG muds./..and lotso stickas!!!LOl
Headers are a good start! That is all I have on my truck (and a 2" dual ex. w/ some rusted out glass-packs) and it has enough power that I haven't messed w/ it. When I do put on a new intake I'll also step up to Vortec heads because you need a different intake for them...for now I just need to get the rest of the truck up to snuff.
I thought he was just asking about the engine, because that is what he mentioned in his first post. Sounds like a good plan by the way. Wish I could get some time/money to build my truck.
I was talking about the engine mostly. But I had to respond about the lift.
Yea, if the engine is all good, work on suspension stuff. ORD steering box brace? Maybe new DT8000's and Furd shock towers for more flex? Shackle flip done? Upgrade driveshafts? Just to think of a few....
I would go for headers, a msd coil, a set of taylor or msd wores, and some NGK's gapped .060. Then retune your carb in and let the suspension work begin.
