Fit/retrofit backup camera?

More pics, since I "updated" my auxiliary fuse panel. Not sure what this is out of, GM something, Dad might have grabbed it for me. Much nicer to have the relays as part of the panel. As always, apologies for crummy phone pics. I can't make excuses for the wiring though. It's a mess. Really need to take the fenders off and do this when I can actually access everything. It's really hard to run wiring with everything that is in the way. To my credit, I wasn't done when every pic was taken, but it's not a whole lot better now that I am.

12 fuse slots, since I purchased all the terminals to wire up the panel as I saw fit, I left ones I'm not using empty. Fair bit of room for expansion I figure, the panel runs the ignition switched EFI circuits, plus the mirror and camera of course.

This is the "holder" I made for it. The last one I used didn't have a cover on it, and really wasn't much of an issue except dust, so I figured I'd bend up and weld a basic cover for this one, since I had to come up with a grounded mount for it anyway. Easy fix! That's an 8GA feed wire coming in from the battery, the others are batt 12V to the relays.

I thought the wing nut on the back of the panel cover was a nice retro touch lol. The auxiliary fuse panels like this are all plastic, and the "feet" are supposed to clip into whatever they mount to. Not real practical in the truck, so I drilled a hole in the panel, put a screw through it, and the wing nut is what tightens the panel to the protective cover so the panel doesn't move around.

Used the camera this weekend out on the logging roads. Too close to the ground to be able to see all the way across the rear of the truck, so have to still be cognizant of rocks or trees behind that might be off to the sides, but it was a big help turning around on roads that had sheer edges....could backup without having to rely on your depth perception (mine sucks) and with that buys a lot more room to swing the truck around, so able to turnaround with less jockeying.

Need to actually try to use it to hook the trailer up. But even for turning around like I was doing, very handy. Almost all the roads are dead ends, so it will get a lot of use just for that.

Bringing this thread back from the dead to share two things. The first is this wolfbox mirror/camera setup (model G930) I just bought to put in my pickup. I'll try to share my experience with it here. Seems to be in a similar vein to the OP although it's the whole mirror instead of just part of it.

In my searching I also found this guy putting out custom gauge bezels and modern stereos for our squares. These look super clean and supposedly avoid cutting up the dash. https://www.classicrevolution.com/collections/stereo-electronics
Seems to have videos of it in action on his instagram.

For AC trucks I think it reroutes the upper duct down to the factory stereo location

That is exactly what i've been planning in my head. There's plenty of room for a big screen up there if you move the AC vent down lower. Given that this guy is selling the dash with a screen in it have to wonder exactly what kind of head unit that is. Not a bad price with the stereo included though. Plenty of folks spend that much just on a new head unit.

For the mirror or the bezel kit? I wouldn't be surprised if there we're low ratings on the bezel kit. It's actively being rolled out and probably has some issues being fixed. Some versions are still not available.

The bezel kit. Multiple reviews saying they don't deliver or communicate.
Where did you read the reviews? I looked at the website and didn't see any. Would like to read some of the feedback since I don't have Instagram myself.

Looks like they are starting to ship this month according to the website, so I'm curious if there are many out there yet. I just heard of these yesterday, so I don't have any background on how long this guy has been working on it.

Scroll to the bottom of the page. All the comments mentioning they have had several shipping dates come and go with no communication.

Now that I know those were there I can see that my ad blocker was blocking those for some reason.

That's sad to see. It's a cool idea. Hopefully it all gets ironed out.

That's so much better than the factory layout. I don't need a clear view of the vent, but it's nice to see the radio. Probably not a big deal when you had 2 giant knobs and a row of mechanical presets, but now that we have 80 tiny buttons and scrolling text to find 1 out the million songs on it, top of the dash is the way to go.

The bad part is when that head unit fails in 5 years and it's not made anymore. Then you have to find something in the same form factor, which can probably be done, but might take some creativity.

So you have to source a 2nd lower-left vent assembly?

Update on this. Looks like all the delays were on the manufacturer side. He has finally got them in and he shipped out all preorders. Hopefully the quality is as good as the idea. Now he just needs to work on his customer service.

He also announced that he repopped the factory small vent on the gauge bezel with a note that he was tired of the poor quality on these. 1773408453952.png

@EvilGenius How are you liking the wolfbox ?
I have one installed in my 01 burb, and another in my manx type buggy. The need to make a roll bar mount for the mirror head.
Plan on one for my 77, but for the 77 I don't need a mirror a nice rectangle screen I could mount in a better location would be cool.

I ended up returning it. Not because of of any real issues, I didn't even install it. I read some reviews that the dash dashcam function isn't great because when you angle the mirror to use it as a mirror the camera is aimed pretty wide. I decided to go with the gmt800 gentex mirror with compass and temp.
