If you are open up front, go for it. I ran 37's in rocks only for a year with my D44. If you are locked, try it but have spare shafts (use 760's joints or better) and have a little throttle reserve. I think there is a little more credit the 1/2 ton stugg deserves than it gets. Many people run out and get a D60 too early in the game (myself included).

His problem is the funds the D60 took up (lots) could have been more beneficial in other places. When money is tight you have to priorities and Matt may have put the cart before the horse. But you live and learn. I have done the same thing and I am sure most have to at one point or another.

To answer the posters question. Sure, I think it can be done for awhile. But if you don't like to carry spare parts and fix things on the trail then it might not be the best setup.

Lockers, gears, lots of torque, and heavy rotating mass are the things you got to worry about. A locker will put alot of stress on the axleshafts and joints. More torque = more stress. Gears will mulitply that stress of the torque. Heavy tires and rims will add more resistence against that stress and then you get broken parts.

If you want to wheel a D44 or 10 bolt hard with 35"+ tires and lockers you better be ready to break things in a fullsize. It isn't a question of if, but a question of when and what.

I carry a complete set of spare axleshaft with new ujionts installed, spare knuckles, spare spindle, spare wheel bearings, spare hub, and a spare yoke. Why? Because eventually something is going to give in that front axle when you place in the rocks with big tires, gears, lockers, etc.

how much stronger would a 3/4 10b be? would it be worth it to swap in that?
I can get one pretty cheap, alot cheaper than a d60.

There is no strength difference between a 1/2 ton and a 3/4 ton 10 bolt. The only strength improvement is a D60.

ok so do you think it would be easier to convert the stock 10b to 8 lug or just swapm in the 3/4 10b??

It is dependent on which axle has the gear ratio you want in it.

Converting to 8 lug isn't hard. The mechanical part of swapping in 8 lug is about the same as doing a brake job or repacking wheel bearings. It isn't hard at all.

I would use whatever axle has the right gears. If you need to regear both axles then use the axle that is in the best overall shape. If that means converting to 8 lug on you current axle so be it.

And while your in there make sure to replace your axle ujoints, repack the wheelbearings, and grease your spindle bearings if they are in ok shape.
