front bumper with spring hangers and funky angle

I've been using a front bumper with spring hangers integrated into it. I mounted the thing up and have been using 56" springs that were a bitch to mount and now I see why. I have the K5 taken apart and have the bumper set aside. The 1/4" plates that mount to the front of the K5 frame are angled to match the angle of the frame (also the main 1/4" plate for the spring hanger). This means the the front of the springs mount at a slight angle inward and are outboard from the stock location a little. From top to bottom the plates are angled 1". Is this a problem or should I just live with it?










 
hmm that seems weird, i dont think it could hurt much other then spring bushings and the bushing sleeves. is ur caster and pinion angle good with that?

Have 4* shims and the mounts being lower makes the pinion is point up at a nice angle. Shackles are also at a nice angle. Those are a few reasons why I kinda like the mounts where they are. But at the rear of the springs the shackles are also angled outward and it looks weird. It might be more trouble than it's worth to keep the mounts. Considering the B52's
 
Looks like an ideal case for those orbital spring eyes. OTOH, that's a chunk of change to fix what seems like bad engineering.

If twere me, I'd cut the hangers off and re-weld them the inch out so they're vertical. You could extend them down a bit or trim them up a bit if you wanted to tweak angles at the same time. They look reasonably stout, and it would save you the $$ of buying/making new mounts.

Course, I'd also weld in the "Okie" bit unless I had enough gas in the torch to cut a "Muskogee" in the front :haha:
 
I think he bolted the first two 1/4" plates to the frame and built the rest of the bumper around it, not knowing that everything was at angles.
 
I wouldnt run it. As said it really seems like whoever built it went "O ****" once they bolted it up and said eh what ever.

If ya have a torch you could always get em red hot and tweek them straight. Just gusset them when your done.
 
what tranny and t case are you running behind that vortec? that is so cool that you have that engine in there ive wanted to do something like that to my blazer for a long time

nevermind question answered by looking through your album. how does it drive does it feel kinda like its new again
 
I wouldnt run it. As said it really seems like whoever built it went "O ****" once they bolted it up and said eh what ever.

If ya have a torch you could always get em red hot and tweek them straight. Just gusset them when your done.

Problem is that the inner spring mount is 1 single peice of the bumper (welded both sides) and has a flat gusset in between the 2 halves thats welded.

Drives like a rocketship compared to my old tired 250K mile carb 350. The first time I took it out I had the fly by wire gas pedal mounted too high and I almost flipped the K5 in a dirt parking lot when I hit a bump, hit the pedal hard, the truck launched into a couple potholes and got sideways. NOT THE KIND OF POWER I WAS USED TO. I'm ditching the escalade pedal alltogether beacuse I've never been able to get it to work properly off road. The swap that Gary Pulls did on the K30 described a pedal that would work much better. I have one on order right now.

Wow we really got off track

wow thats so sweet i want to do this im mine now but i kinda have a thing about not trusting vehicles that require a computer to run. so im very torn:crazy:

LS1's and other Gen III motors have definatly proven their stuff in all kinds of rigs. Fuel injection isn't as scary as you would think. I have a scan tool that tells me what's wrong when it throws a code. It's also nice to not have the thing die all the time because the carb floods on seroius jolts and hill angles, ajust the carb when I go high in altitude, not have to fiddlephuck with the thing just to get it started when it's cold, and not get stuck in sand because the power to weight ratio is fianlly on my side. The benefits outweigh the drawbacks.
