Front driveshaft rubbing crossmember

Put my front driveshaft in yesterday after throwing on some new 6" springs and took it out today to see how it ran. The front cv part of the driveshaft by the tcase is rubbing just barely on the tranny/tcase crossmember. What would be the easiest fix for this? I can't imagine it would be okay to grind down that area of the crossmember...

Your trans mount still in one piece? Same thing happened to me, was the trans mount that bolts to the T-case. Cracked in half

What size CV do you have?

I'm only running about 4" or 5" of lift but I had the same problem when I first got a 1350 CV with a stock crossmember. I notched it and welded some plate to reinforce it.

Stock front driveshaft, I'm not sure what size it is, but its definately rubbing on the actual cv, partly on the ujoint caps.

My tranny mount looks okay to me, I guess it wouldn't hurt swapping it though. Any other ideas?

I have a 6" lift in mine and the CV is close But don't touch. The center ball in the CV may be bad.:dunno:

superlift driveshaft spacer if angle permits SUP4310

I considered the spacer once, but then i decided, took the croosmember down, cut and weld and done with it

ya the spacer helps it not rub, plus takes up the slack from being to short after the lift, however it will increase your angle...double edge sword. I ran one with my 6"/36's and never had a problem but since I cant weld etc I had no choice

Mine rubbed at one time, but that was after i had high centered the truck pretty good on some rocks, bent & tweeked the crossmember back alittle, also as previously mentioned, the trans mount was still connected, but wore out and flattened, as were the motor mounts. Everything sagging like that was my cause, also it would only really rub on uphill pulls, when the whole engine/trans assembly would torque to the pass side. :waytogo:

I had this same problem on my 82. The earlier trucks have a straight crossmember while the later trucks have a crossmember that is sorta "s" shaped to clear the exhaust and driveshaft. Swapping to the later crossmember requires a different tranny mount I believe. What I did was space the crossmember down from the frame by flipping the spacers around (I know that some people shy away from this because of stress fractures and such, so a solid spacer could be used too.) Then I had some 1 inch blocks machined and put them under the tranny mount with longer bolts to space the tranny back up 1 inch from the crossmember.

Check your motor and tranny mounts. Also, your CV shaft should be solid, and not move around at all, or the center ball in the CV is loose.

If you fix/check all that and you still have a problem, clearance your crossmember and weld a reinforcement piece on the bottom.
