Hello, I was wondering if anyone could help me out trying to find front wheel bearings.
First off, Im working on my stock 88 Jimmy 4x4 5.7L.
Last summer I replaced the upper/lower ball joints and inner/outer tie rods (this is my first truck so that was lots of fun figuring that out lol:doah:) with moog parts I ordered from RockAuto. I had a little bit of trouble finding the correct tie rods for it because every site or parts store I went to listed the wrong ones. I ended up tracking down the right tie rods with part numbers I found through this site:bow:
But anyways, I ordered new sets of wheel bearings for my truck seeing as how I would have everything apart anyways so I would just do them also. The bearings I ordered are:
front outer: a-35
front inner: lm104949
But when I got to them they werent the right size at all. I apologize now because I cant recall if they were too big or too small but I know that they definitely werent the right ones. Ive been trying to find other listings for my truck with no luck so far, even the parts stores in town say the same ones that I got from RockAuto:confused:
If anyone has any ideas or part numbers for other wheel bearings that would be great, I apologize if this seems like a really dumb problem, I honestly have been looking for a long time trying to figure it out.
Thanks

Without giving you exactly what you want, did you happen to check for an '87 K5?

Rockauto sent my Dad a slave cylinder that was NEVER used on a 1973-1987(91) C/K/R/V, but was (and still is) shown as fitting. This example isn't one of them, but many times, using 1988-1991 (R/V) results in you getting parts for the "New" body style IFS rigs. Backing it up to 1987 in those cases normally results in getting the right pieces.

Thanks for the reply. Ya Ive checked a couple years back, going back all the way to early 80's list the same ones. No worries though Ill just take it apart and see if I can get any numbers off of them or bring them to the parts store and match them up.

Do you want me to check my parts manual? Would having the GM part number (if it's not listed as a set) help?

You can always try the parts catalog at AC Delco.com, I'm not sure if they sell bearings or not, but you could certainly cross reference the part numbers you bought to see if they show the same, then reverse the cross reference so you can find what aftermarket part numbers are the right piece.

Sucks that getting something so obviously common is difficult because the part suppliers have wrong info. :(

Timken #
Set 45 - outer bearing and race pkg. (LM501349 bearing, LM501310 race)
JLM104910 - inner race
LM104949 - inner bearing

Just re-did my entire front end on my '89 Blazer and this is what I used.
In fact I still have the Timken boxes with the old bearings inside.
Maybe you got a return LM104949 with wrong parts in the box. Happened to me more than once.
And the A35 is for a big hub Dana 44 up to '77. 3/4 & 1 ton trucks.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I think I might look it up through AC Delco and cross reference, thats a really good idea! :thumb: As for the wrong bearings in the wrong box thats not the case, all the numbers on the bearings match the packaging.

I realize this thread is old but it has exactly what I was looking for, I think.

I've got an 85 K10 that I'm putting 8 lug hubs on. From what I've read, my 1/2 ton spindles (being that all 10 bolt 1/2 tons had the larger spindles) are the same as the 3/4 ton spindles of all years. I don't know what year the hubs I'm getting are. They're just used 3/4 ton 8 lug hubs.

Do the bearings and races in the picture in post #5 fit all years of 8-lug D44/10 bolt hubs and the 10 bolt 1/2 ton spindle?

I always try to match up what was in there and working by getting the numbers off the old races and cups,in case someone swapped the axle or spindles before I owned the truck...usually you can still read them even if the bearings got chowed up ..

No, there was a year split between small and big bearing and the year split was mid 1976. If the hubs you get use a different bearing then you'll need to find the matching spindles as well. You cannot swap bearing sizes in the hubs from one size to the other.

Ok, just so I know I follow you, the split in small/big bearing refers to the 3/4 ton hubs and spindles.. But am I correct in that my 1985 1/2 ton 10 bolt spindles use the big bearing? If so, then I just need to be shopping for mid-'76 and later 3/4 ton hubs, right?

Something else I'm not clear on is the "big hub" 3/4 and 1 ton that uses the Timken A35 instead of the set45. So when it comes to 3/4 ton front hubs, are there three different ones- small bearing, large bearing, and "big hub" ?

ok, there is no difference between 1/2 and 3/4 ton spindles. From mid 1976 and earlier the spindles are considered "small spindle" and use the smaller ID bearings, mid 1976 and later used the "large spindle" and used the larger ID bearings.

Big hub refers to external locking hubs which IIRC is only on small bearing spindles. All other hubs use what are called internal locking hubs regardless of 1/2 or 3/4 ton.

One ton stuff is all by itself and nothing from 1/2 or 3/4 ton will interchange. One ton stuff for GM was 1977-1991.

Ok, thanks brother. I've been researching all afternoon and found a thread with TONS of information on Pirate but between all the insults, even the productive posts had conflict but the posters that posted based off experience and not just what this or that book/manual stated pretty much agree with what you said. I'm going with that.

I've been into my stock 85 1/2 ton front 10 bolt once already just to replace bearings and what I do know is they are stock 85 1/2 ton 10 bolt spindles and they have the internal auto locking hubs. Unfortunately, I didn't save the boxes or part numbers from the bearins and races I used but I got them from O'Reillys looking up my year model in the computer and they fit.

I'll be looking for 3/4 ton 8 bolt hubs that require internal locking hubs and these should match my stock 85 1/2 ton 10 bolt spindles. Thanks again.

Just because they are internal locking hubs doesn't mean they will be correct. I used to have a 1976 Blazer and it had the large bearing spindles with internal locking hubs but there are also small bearing spindles with internal locking hubs as well. While I personally like to keep things simple by using year specific parts so when I need to order parts from the store I just use my vehicle year and model I certainly wouldn't worry about making it a priority if something else comes up and you have to change spindles for instance. It would be nice though to keep the large bearing spindles since they are plentiful if you ever did need to replace one down the road.

Ok. Well the "kit" I had my eye on in eBay got bought after I had it in my cart. It was a pair of hubs and a pair of back plates all for $200. Oh well. I haven't seen backing plates anywhere else. They do have a few hubs on there but they are the same price as new aftermarkets. I'm tempted to buy all new parts but I can't seem to find any new back plates. I'm surprised no body offers a kit for front ball joint axles for 6-8 conversions like they do on disc conversions and such.

Just buy a complete 8-lug 10-bolt out of the junkyard as you should be able to find one for $200 or less. Use the 8-lug stuff to convert your front axle, or just swap out the entire assembly. Keep the leftovers for spares or sell them to recoup some money. From the factory all of the 10-bolts used the same spindles and bearings.

Just be cautious as you are looking at 30+ year old trucks so always a chance that the junkyard truck or axle has had parts swapped around over the years.

I've got a new lead on some 3/4 ton spindles and back plates but if it falls through then there's a local salvage yard I might hit up Saturday. I'm tempted to research all the details of D44/10 bolt hubs and spindles and make a document to ask approval on from admin to make a sticky where it's all compiled in one place. The 10 bolt stuff is easy. It seems to get hairy with the D44s around the 76-79 years. Then you throw in the inner and exterior lock outs in on top of that. Just seems like one of those topics that never dies in multiple forums. It's crazy though because it seems there are even published documents that contradict facts.
