Fuel pump for TBI conversion

So far I haven't had any problems with my fuel pump setup, but after showing it to bigblock72 he was able to explain the short-comings of my setup. Apparently, the electric pump can get pretty hot under the hood causing the fuel in the line/pump to turn to vapor. The heat and vapor are hard on the pump as I understand it. Sounds like I am going to ditch the mechanical and relocate the electric. Hope this helps.

All true but they have been run this way on many vehicles for many miles and only once have I seen the fuel hot enough to turn to vapor (vapor lock as known in carburetors).

Why won't this work beyond 250hp, and what can you do to make it work?
More HP, more fuel. You just need a pump sufficient for the HP. The 5001 will supply enough fuel for more HP engines if mounted near the fuel tank mounted near level with bottom of tank. Then again you will need high pressure hose from pump to TBI (expensive).

If you have a fuel pressure gauge you can watch for drops in pressure. Also if you can not seem to tune out a lean condition at high RPM? Look at pressure.

A simple 80ish micron filter or sock alleviates the problem and makes the pump a lot happier and have a lot less chance of failure out in the middle of nowhere.

I went and got the electric pump since I already ran the return line and don't want to spend time and money debugging it. I want to get this thing running soon. Maybe I'll try the quickfuel version later when more funds are available.

If I put a simple filter before the pump, do you then add a efi friendly filter after the pump to protect the injectors? Is anything rated for efi ok?

Electric pumps should not have a filter before them other than the pick-up sock in the tank. Yes, any EFI filter should do but be installed AFTER the pump.
