This was from another forum that Im on. A BOV is a Bug Out Vehicle for when SHTF. THere was no discussion about terrain or areas, we were discussion vehicles ingeneral and this lil gem popped up.

"If you want a real BOV go with a Toyota. A stock Toyota will go anywhere in the woods and get great gas MPG. Or a Suzuki Samarai. They are just as good in the woods if not better than a Toyota. I have seen stock Toyotas and Samarai's do things you wouldn't believe. Nothing else can even compare. A full size truck or k5 would be left behind in minutes. Even if they could keep up (which they wouldn't) they would run out of gas."

thats why hundreds of people rip out the toyota or suzuki drivetrain and replace it with all chevrolet...

The funny thing is the range for all 3 vehicles is about the same.. except the K5 carries and burns more fuel.

Myself personally, I think most stock 4x4's with good tires will go farther than many people are willing to give them credit..

Narrower profile of the Toys and Samis are great for getting around trees, but if I were "bugging out" I'd be hitting unimproved logging roads. Less chance of breaking stuff and around these parts there are literally thousands of miles of logging roads.

It goes without saying the load capacity of the K5 vs Sami and the durability, etc. Just look at the aftermarket, most trail quality Samis rarely have any stock components to them. Depending on the make of toyota, they are very capable as well. but to compare sami vs k5 is just funny.

I do think a stock sami is highly overrated.. I can not believe how they are going for over $3000 around here :eek1:

Gross generalities going on there. Probably one of those guys who might change his own oil and maybe rotate his tires. Everything else is hearsay and, "well, I own it so it's the best!"

I'd pimp all of them. Just sold my last Suzuki and not because it was crappy or anything. Just needed something bigger...

...which is the problem with a Samurai. They're small. You can hardly fit the necessary tools and spares in one let alone stuff for more than one person. This guy must either have a hidey hole or not be planning on taking all that much with him.

If you had somewhere stocked up way out in the middle of nowhere and weren't taking much with you when you took off the Sami'd be killer. Maybe even good to already have stashed out at your place. However if you're planning on taking stuff with you...ain't going to cut it.

For the record the K5 might have a better range. Even a gasser if it can squeeze 13mpg out of a 25 gallon tank it'll likely have longer legs than a Samurai with the little 10-12 gallon tank (I forget what Sami's have but my Trackers all had 11gal).

Sami is 10 gal. I had one and let me tell you those damn things are not safe to drive on the road. They are very incapable vehicles stock IDC what this kid says. Samis need either toyota rears or chromo shafts to even be viable to be on larger than 31in tires and even then you cant carry anything as said. Dont get me wrong I love the little things but they need mucho work to go anywhere wheras a toyota or k5 on 31s can go all over the place and has reliability.

You also have to take other variables into account.
At this point where my trucks sit, if I had to get out and go a long way, Im grabbing the old C10. If I need to get somewhere speedy, Id proabably grab the K5, and if I needed to do some serious wheeling Id grab the GMC...if it was done.

heaven forbid you should be in a hurry in a sami....

I do have one. Your aren't getting anywhere fast.

I must respond, see my username umm yeah you are talking about my two favorite off road vehicles. Both trucks bone stock are extremely capable off road. If you drive the zuk like the blazer it will suck and vice versa.

The only thing I want to comment on is range. As far as off road goes, mainly just unimproved roads speeds never above 40 I would say. You can go alot further in a zuk. How do I know cause at the end of the day of wheeling like that I still had a half a tank and the two blazers with me only had a quarter tank and we were all full at the beginning of the day. At speeds above 45 I would say the blazer would have the range. I think either or would be great bugout vehicles just depends on how many others you need to carry

samis and toyaotas are very capable off road.read my sig.i wheel with a sami on 34s and one on 36s.they have had little problems.the good thing about a sami and a yota is you can build 2 for the price of one k5.i looked at going this route at one time and i just cant wheel without a v8.i like the skinny pedal to much.not as into crawling

My K25 is the ultimate BOV! Mechanically injected turbocharged diesel with a 5 speed manual transmission and a 43 gallon fuel capacity. You could blow a nuke up and while 90% of all fuel injected rigs are gonna suffer EMP damage, my K25 is gonna fire up like any other day (even if I have to pull start it should the batteries fail), and will get me where I need to go at better than 70 mph whilst still offering better than 18 - 20 mpg. If I am in no hurry, I can get 20 - 22 mpg with it.

That, and I can haul most of my important earthly posessions with me in a single load with the long box and my slip in camper

How would you pull start it? How would you get the glow plugs hot?

If it is already warm or dependeing on the temp outside it should fire up and if not a little sniff of either should do it.

I didn't know you could bump start a diesel... 20:1 seems like it would just lock the tires up

Oh it can be done. I wouldn't suggest it. Towed my 86 Mercury Topaz around the block with the clutch out in second gear to generate enough something to fire her up. Then there was the few minutes the neighborhood disappeared from being flooded. Very harsh but works when the starter is gone and the battery is flat.
