I'm in the middle of rebuildiing my carburetor (Holley Street Avenger 670cfm), and have learned a thing or two about gasket removal.

I assumed that the carb cleaner that I was soaking everything in would be enough to remove gaskets. The throttle body gasket did not want to come off. Carb cleaner is not good enough. I bought some gasket remover, and it came right off. I did let it soak for about forty minutes, but it was definitely worth the extra $10.

So, if you have gaskets that need to be removed, use gasket remover, no matter what other stuff you have lying around that you think will work.

If any of you have any other tips for gasket removal, please pass those on here. I'd love to know, because if I have a similar problem on say my valve cover gaskets, then gasket remover wouldn't really work, as it could drip down into the oil.

I looked for one locally, but couldn't find one. I didn't fell like waiting an extra two days to get one from Amazon. Gasket remover spray works great though.

gotta watch scrapers, blades, etc on some carb surfaces tho, not only is the metal very soft, but more importantly they often have a thin raised section in the middle of the surface that you can f*ck up, and shouldn't...

Yeah, I was avoiding metal tools. I used a plastic scraper on the thing. It's still not 100% clean. I have to buy more gasket remover. It doesn't stretch as far as you'd think.

That's what I'm using to clean my carburetor. It's useless on gaskets though.

Have you only been brushing the stuff on or letting it sit submerged for an hour or so? This stuff worked great 25 years ago but maybe they have changed the formula. I always let parts soak for an hour then remove them and hose them off with water and the pieces looked brand new.

The tough one was the throttle body gasket. I let that soak for 3 hours. On about 3 different days. It still wouldn't come off. I put some gasket remover on it, let it sit for about 30 minutes, and it came right off.
