Gas on the Dip Stick? WTF

As title implies I have a 74 blazer changed the oil, put new 9 psi Hi vol fuel pump on, new float (which is too short) from autozone, has holley 4 bbl double pumper carb., edelbrock intake manifold, has comp cam sticker on radiator support (assuming it has one in it).

It is a crate motor not sure on miles just bought this blazer for $500, so not sure what all has been done to it over the years, other than before I got it running again it had sat at least a year.

Well after all this checked the oil after just letting her run short periods of time in the back yard, and the dip stick looked just a little cloudy on edges, but to my surprise smelt like gas.

What could it be and how do I fix it?

Don't believe it is headgasket SMELLS LIKE GAS.
 
A blown headgasket on the oil galleys will pump combustion gasses e.g unburnt fuel into oil. Not as common as blowing to a water passage, but happens.
 
while idling is it dumping fuel out of the boosters while running? 9psi may be pushing past the needle/seat. In fact I'd probably pull them both out and blow/clean them out and reinstall along with setting the floats to the proper height.
 
Does not blow fuel out of boosters, runs rich though need to adjust carb., the fuel sending unit they gave me is shorter than factory had put in 2 gallons after insatalling the float and the putting the tank back into place, and was sucking air. Put in another 4 gallons was all good.
 
the floats could be stuck, needle stuck, excess fuel pressure all can contribute to gassy oil. It could have been flooded real bad at one time and the gas seeped down past the rings. I would say sort the rich issue, and change the oil and see if it comes back
 
You might have a bad fuel pump. When I worked at Advance Auto I saw that happen a few times and we actually filed a claim one time for one of out fuel pumps causing a engine to go out.
 
mechanical or electric pump? If mechanical, the pump could be dumping gas directly to the crank case through a bad diaphragm. I know you said it was a new pump but this is still a possibility.

As far as being flooded my "mechanic buddy" was pooring gas in the carb like it was going out of style after we had changed the fuel sending unit thinking it was a suction prob.
Then we realised it was sucking air added fuel in the tank fired and ran, spits little gas out of exhaust tips when you give it gas at idle, idels good, good pedal response, smells rich.
 
My four, yes, four hour oil change is over. The oil filter won the first couple battles, but in the end the 5150 kicked in and turned the oil filter into swiss cheese had to go buy some channel locks, came back and won the war. Before you all tell me about oil filter wrenches, the guy who put the headers on must not have been worried about changing the oil filter at the time, cause damn they were all up in the way.
 
Another quick note not sure if it is because it has been in the 40's and 30's but did not notice any fuel comming out of exhaust before and after the oil change.

Does idle a little rougher than it was.

Fires right up put the pedal to the floor once turn the key before I can let go she is running like a raped date.
 
that your problem.dumping fuel in the carb and not having it running right away will let it run through the rings if it sits long enough.after oil change see if it happens again without dumping fuel in there.:wink1:
 
If the problem persists I would look at the diaphram on the mechanical fuel pump. I had this same problem with a Ford six and my FJ40.

Next time just shove a screwdriver through the side of the oil filter and use it to take the filter off. Its quick!

X2! I cursed at the guy at Wal-Mart that gorilla'd the filter on my parents Suburban for 45 minutes once, only to get it off in less than a minute with the screwdriver.
