So this week i cracked apart my tranny and 203. The tranny was blown so i needed to take the two apart. My problem is why does my 203 smell like my axles isnt it supposed to have 10-30 in it? Im getting sick of dealing with PO issues.

the 203 use's straight 30 weight motor oil.

if you use ATF or gear lube it will kill the chain because it does not lube properly

I always thought ATF for everything except the NP205 - gear oil for that.

No, NP203 takes 30 weight

ATF goes in aluminum T-case's like the 208 and 241

The owners manual for my 77 says 10w30 or 10w40 motor oil for the 203.

They're pretty tolerant, but motor oil vs. gear oil is a good call.

The gear reduction box (the part we use for our doubler setups) is fine with 80W90 or something similar, it's the rest of the 203 that needs the light oil.

Yeah you could fill it with solvent and drain it to wash out the gear oil

and then re-fill with ATF.

No not 10-30 straight 30 is what you want in your 203 and I would just drain it and not really worry about filling it with solvent.

Where is all this straight 30 weight nonsense coming from?
