Gear pattern check please! d44 14bff

.010 is too much backlash.needs to be in the .008 range.the 44 looks alright but could be moved a lil clooser like .005 added to the left side of the bearings and push the ring gear a lil closer to the pinion.althought the coast side looks alright and thats where the drive gear hits going forward.it could be ran but in reverse deflection may wear out the gears prematurely.the 14 bolt looks centered heal to toe and should run fine is the backlash is between .005 and .008.it will probably like to bein the .006 range since they are used to get a good pattern.on the front bearings are a certain tolerance but not exact.so while reusing the same shims will get you close,it may not be perfect.

I think the 14 bolt was exactly 0.006 maybe 0.0065. I think I will button it up when I get back from vacation Friday, and take the d44 to have a shop move a 5 thousadths shim from one side to the other.

Thanks

Hey, just got back from the gear shop...the guy was friendly and recommended that I leave it (the d44) the way it is.

He said "You can pay me to do it, but I would leave it. Ten thousandths (backlash) is fine for gears that have been run for that long (axles are from a 76), especially since it's a front axle." This was after I told him that the pattern was centered, but the coast was running at the edge of the toe. He also said the new bearings wouldn't change anything significantly.

I took his advice since he works on differentials all day every day. Please let me know if you think what he said is valid, or if you have any objections, otherwise I will just put it back together.

if you trust him and is reputable,id leave it and run it as is.it just seemed a lil too far away ftom the toe to be perfect..010 also pulls it farther away from the pinion as well.most people put more forward motion in the gears most of the time anyway and thats where the pattern looked closer.if it whines when you use 4 wheel drive you know it has to be fixed and moved closer.
