Ok. My girls car finally died. Shes got 2k to spend. Im looking for a small reliable truck that gets 15 to 25 mpg. The more the better. Cant do pickups. Im looking for s10 size. I was looking at older pathfinders but im not sure. Whats good? What should i look for? Help she needs a car soon. Thanks.

my stepdads got a little v6 5spd ranger, im decently impressed considering its a ford, though its 2wd and a pickup. Interior space is a bit cramped and the only thing shed be hawling is her friends so.

I've heard nothing but good things about the older rangers with gas mileage and reliability. I know the s-10 doesn't have quite as good of a reputation.

Also, if you can find one, an older Toyota pickup. Those things are unstoppable and pretty good on gas...

What about a Rav-4 or CR-V? I don't know too much about the CR-V but Rav-4's are dependable and get good mileage.

An old pathfinder or 4Runner if you could find one. Also the little jeep thingys that were in the beginning of the little ones-XJ I think. Those were available w/TBI and were pretty reliable too.

First choice would be Toyota PU with R22 bullet proof engine good MPG. 2nd.Ranger or Mazda 4cyl. IMO Stay away from S10 unless in very good condition.
The "little Jeep thingys" mentioned above are "YJs" They are MPFI and get 22 MPG. Very popular 4x4. I am looking for one for my daughter. XJs are late model jeeps.
Might also want to look into a GeoTracker or Suzuki Samauri. Good MPG, Basic 4x4, can be had for cheap.

you guys think the pathfinders are good? Not many 4runners on craigslist. I was thinking wranglers or cj but they are alot of money for the age and wear and most are stick which she dosnt want. If the ranger came in an suv type thing id go for it but no pickups. Anything else? Any specfic years? Ive seen a couple decent looking pathfinders going for around 1500-2500 all around the early 90s.

Hows these? A few of em look good right?

I know the owners of and I've done a bunch of work on two different Pathfinders ('89 and '94) and I'm not terribly impressed by either.

Always remember that a cheaper 4WD can have a lot of repair costs (especially a newer one).

Meh, i just want her to get something reliable and that will last and that she can put her friends in, with decent gas mileage. Last car she had was a pos hyndai elentra, an old pink one, i just dont want her to get a money pit. Dosnt have to look pretty.

I was referring to the XJ - it replaced the Cherokee. They were available as a 2wd w/TBI. PM mr. smartass about the Pathfinder. He has/had one. I had an '85 4Runner w/the 22RE. That was a tough little truck and was injected to boot. Should have kept it for a trail rig.:D Also look at the Isuzu Trooper from late 80's early 90's. These have to be going for cheap and were very reliable, even made 4WOTY once.

By "not impressed" by the Pathfinders I meant that I didn't feel they were great vehicles in general (reliability, quality, etc.).

Cherokees could be an ok alternative; they're pretty cheap, and fairly reliable but I wouldn't expect more than 15 mpg out of one.

Why not a 4 door sedan with good winter tires on it? 4WD fetches a lot of money.

Forget a 4x4 truck/SUV. Get arunning good running Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla
Getting her a 2K 4x4 is asking for a lot of trouble and work(For You)

any honda ive seen around here for 2k has like 150k on it or more. They keep their value. I figure id rather have her in a bigger truck with room, saftey than a car. plus i would think a truck with 80k would be the same or better with a honda with 150k i know they last but 150-200k is insane, i agree with the civic though, i got one, just thats too much mileage.

Find her an older cavalier or something. What's the necessity for a truck/SUV?

my dad commuted for years in a 91 hyunai excel gl. good for 35+ mpg and when we sold after 195000 miles, it still made 90%+ compression in all four cylinders. VERY simply wired and even had the original clutch until 150000. not too bad, and it looked decent too.

Well she always said she wanted a truck after i got my blazer. And problems with a 4x4 under 2k? I got my k5 for 1200 and she was fine till i got her :D Now i need to rebuild the 208 haha. I mean i guess she could get another ****box like she had easy, but she wanted a truck and i figure a smaller suv wouldnt kill her on gas, would give her more room and be a little better in snow and the ability to follow me on the beach. I dont know, a car is still a possibility, but i dont want her to get anything and find out it has alot of known problems later. As i said this is a chance for her to get a truck. It dosnt have to be pretty, just be decent with gas and reliable. You think 80-100k is too much for pathfinders?

How are cherokees? I know the straight 6 is supose to last forever, and they are awesome on sand. and how about wranglers? Though most i see for 2k or less have about 150k on em too.
