Good small engine/auto trans swap option?

Though sacrilege, a turbo 2.3 from from a t-bird or svo mustang could be built to be fairly rowdy. They have their own following but since it’s been 40 odd years since they came out they might be hard to find and somewhat spendy.

But they could have had a t-5 trans and a 8.8 rear that could be pretty strong too.

How about the Buick 3.8 v6, with fuel injection?
That's what I am thinking of putting in the cj5 I am picking up.
It did pretty good in the firebird and camaro as well as the Bonneville ssi in Supercharged form
I ran supercharged 3800s for 15 years. Part of why I got out was the difficulty finding a clean engine anymore. And the rebuild process is a big deal because all the caps have to be resized, etc, so a crate engine is probably the way to go: https://www.jegs.com/i/ATK-Engines/059/DB62/10002/-1. You can start with a Camaro 3800 for the RWD setup and there is a rare Holden intake you can get for the air intake (FWD engine basically has the throttle through the firewall). But really the way to do it is skip the supercharger and put a turbo on it.

Yeah, I have a crate engine sitting in my shed right now

Tell us more. I still remember hauling 4 3800 blocks to scrap, dreaming of making a V-24.
Nothing really to tell.
A friend ordered a 4.3 from gmgoodwrench and they sent him a 3.8
When he told them, they told him to keep it and sent him a 4.3
So I bought from him for $600
