OK, we have a 1985 Shortbox Chevy we're going to be building soon. I thought it would be cool to have some input from the CK5 brotherhood on how the build progresses.

We'd like this build to end up streetable but very capable off road.

We're going to start off with a small block Chevy
Dana 60/Dana 70
TH700R4/NP241 or NP208.

We're planning for a 38" or so tire.

We will be prototyping some stuff on this rig so if you have something you'd like to see, we'll see what we can do. No guarantees but a chance to get it in there. Alot of stuff already planned for the R and D, just wanted to give you guys a chance to push it one way or the other.

General parts fab will begin tomorrow.

how about a 4 link kit that is actually affordable?

For now the plan calls for leaf springs but it is something we want to do down the road a bit as a build revisit.

Nothing is set in stone though.

I'm suggesting a bobbed bed, tube front fenders with kindof a factory line look that blend with your tube doors. Full cage ofcourse. 42's, Aluminum bead locked wheels. Try to lighten it as much as possible. Race suspension seats. Ditch the factory dash, go custom dash. The gammet of cool DIY parts.... just a few sugestions :D

All I'm gonna say is, think outside the CK5 box, figure something new out that we can see works, and start a new CK5 phenomenon...

rdn2blazer may have hit something, how about a dash kit? Lots of guys are gutting interiors to eliminate clutter or clear cage work, I think the cabs are the same thru the years so how about a semi simple tube dash kit. Maybe a couple of tubes prebent to bolt in on the sides where the dash does and a blank piece of sheet metal so we can arrange the gauges.

Custom dash would be awsome.

How about a diy4x steering box brace. I know the 'other guy' makes one but I bet ol kert can improve it.

i wonder how a whole kit to box a frame would sell?...

I'm on the fence on either 4 link rear or your shackle flip. So if you go 4 link, I will hold my decision till I see your pics.

Can't wait to see your R&D. I need to order alot of stuff from you, soon. Just waiting on the $$$$ to show. Maybe next week.:D

I like the dash suggestion also. Something simple and clean but very versitile.

Bruiser

Need a before pic. How about set the engine back 2 inches, relocate the rad to the back, shorten the steering column ect,

I know you could build one but how bout that Cross member/pan hard bar thingy from dcubb, see if he could trade you one for some of your stuff. Keeps you from having to build a better mouse trap. His stuff looks WAY quality, just a thought.

Put GEN III motor in it im sure that the market for the parts to put those engines in our style trucks is going to grow

Lots of good material here guys! Keep 'em coming.

One thing to keep in mind on things like the 4 link type R and D suggestions. We do have somewhat of a time crunch up front to get the thing on wheels so for now, we'll slap the leaf springs under it, (Already rebuilt packs waiting in the wings) At some point we'll go back and do a 4 link or some variation there of and pull the leaf spring stuff off. You guys will have first dibs on the take offs.

By the way, the project has been dubbed project "Grade 8."

High clearence engine crossmember, custom dash would be cool. I would also like to see some sort of tube fenders. Oh, and put your narrowed cab on it! ;)

you know 52s,64s,crossover ect..my prefrences (even though you said later on down the road)

4 link rear
your full hydro setup
some dovetailing or mabye a full cab narrow
a new type of doubler of sorts (mabye something with a dana 300 or something)

idk im not an intevator that one of my problems but you are so i know you can come up with something diffrent and crazy in your own way

I bet an engine crossmember would be pretty popular, pretty simple to make also

Maybe a cap for the steering box for hydro assist
