gotta problem with my fuel gauge

ok my 86 k5 had its battery explode about a month ago, when i put the new battery in the fuel gauge was almost strait down on the full side. not when i fill it its in the east direction on the gauge. every so often it will read right, then its back to messing around. so my question is, to i need a new gauge or a new sending unit. and did the battery have something to do with this?

Try checking your fuses, especially the one that controls the gages and the engine idle, should be the same one.

Sounds more like a bad/poor ground if the needle is moving around...

what ground would i look for? would it be for the fuel gauge or the gauge cluster? and would it be under the dash or hood? i'll try the fuses and see if that works also.
