Grant steering wheel = Possible violent death.

Fine, there are exceptions to everything, but the problem is MUCH more common in trucks for the reasons mentioned. Bottom line is that if you need assistance in and out of the truck, add a grab handle or something. Don't use the wheel or your asking for problems…

I saw a mid 70's chevy truck the other day and the owner had taken grab bars that you ussually see on the outside of the cab behind the door and mounted them on the windshield pillar on the interior. Might be OK on pickups but not blazers. I plan on having grab handles on the cage.

Great I just ordered a Grant........ poop

Someone please tell me it isn't going to explode...

Thanks for tilt info though, been yanking on it for years, will hook up a chain to the roof ASAP

I think I better add some grab handles then. I never had to use the steering wheel to help myself into the truck until I finished my cage. The extra couple of inches I need to get my feet over makes a grab handle a necessity now. I have been using the steering wheel the last few weeks though /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif

FWIW I swapped an 88+ IFS truck steering wheel on. It's thicker, slightly smaller diameter and 10 times more comfortable than the old stock wheel.

I got one off an 86 and wrapped it in a sew on leather cover, which I like. Feels funny to have a fullsize wheel again.

I am kinda amazed how many of you old timers haven't heard about the tilt-column no-no /forums/images/graemlins/shame.gif

Someone told me this shortly after I got my truck...but the damage had already been done (by the previos owner) /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif

I got a bunch of dazed looks going into bearing shops asking for a 1.75" OD 1" ID(I think /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif )angular contact ball bearing /forums/images/graemlins/screwy.gif I think I ended up with a 45mm x 25mm sealed ball bearing.
Didn't ask what the load rating on it was /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif but with the bearings about 2" apart and the steering wheel about 6" from the last bearing you would have about 900lb on it with 225lb on the steering wheel.

It's not like I never heard about it. I recall Bigburb going through the whole column rebuild over three years ago (maybe more) It only just occurred to me that I was now using the steering wheel to help myself into the truck. /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif Fortunately it's only been the last few weeks and I don't weigh much more than a buck and a half.

Had a very sobering moment in Moab last week. After running a bunny hill trail with the whole family in the truck, We drove into town and had decent lunch at Zax's Pizza. Upon returning to Blazer I grabbed the steering wheel to pull myself in and felt some play in it, so I gave it a gentle turn and it spun right on the steering shaft. When Iunbolted it from the steering column I came to learn that my properly installed adapter is butter soft and had stripped out all of the spines that engage the steering /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif For some lucky reason this gave way while parked, and not going 65 down a 2 lane freeway.

This Grant steering product is a dangerous piece of crap and I would like to pass along warning to all not to trust your life to it. I have reinstalled a stock steering wheel which not only benefits from hardened wheel splines, but also a pressed fit.

Thanks for reading my book. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

If you have a tilt column NEVER EVEN TOUCH IT WHEN GETTING INTO THE TRUCK!!!!!!!!!!

I have had problems with the tilt on both of my trucks (71k5 and 87s10). The bearings that are in there are very close together and very thin. It is a very bad design. If you have been doing this for years you have only gotten luckey that your bearings haven't shattered yet.

In my k5 when the bearing shattered there was nowhere I could get a new one. I could get the outter race and the balls but no one had the inner race. I ended up having to machine the column and the steering shaft and use a metric bearing that was smaller ID and bigger OD.

I have never seen a Grant product (of any kind) that hasen't sucked! I have one on my truck right now (was on it when I bought it /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif) and it is getting swapped out with a factory one from a late 80's truck.

I actually really liked the thin steering wheel on my 1985 K5. My 1990 GMC Jimmy has a thick one that is OK. I thought about changing mine over, because I had access to a GMC badge but decided to just get used to what was there.

Dam man! You were very luckey!

Do you know the model number of your steering wheel adapter? Also, have you contacted Grant to see if they may have had a recall on your specific adapter? /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

/forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

No mine is the 2 spoke style thin-wheel type, a 1985 steering wheel. I have that type wheel in my 1990 GMC jimmy. I have a GMC badge for that, but I'd rather keep it :-)

I know, I just got my membership a few days ago and I haven't changed color. I always figured that, to yourself, your always blue....guess not. /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

when i had my 91 s10 the same thing happened-but i was actually driving and came to make a left turn and the wheel came off in my hands and almost hit 2 cars and ended up on the center divider on a busy ass rd-scared the shhiit out of me-the column was thrashed- it was way beyond rebuild- i found 1 at a yard and replaced it /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif

no steve changed it now all new members stay blue, and if you were orange when he changed it you stay orange. I wonder if you were blue (had been orange)when the changeover happened, if you got stuck on teh blue side....
