Griff's thread about nothing in particular.

Rust bucket

Offer $1500 and walk away, leave your number

Well, I offered him $1500, he said he'd keep it on the table, as he's got another guy coming to look at it tomorrow, We'll see what happens.

Also, I've shown pictures of my buddy Kenny's truck before, but not a comparison to where it started.

^^^ That's dedication right there.

Mine wasn't quite that bad, but it was in a similar category when I started, exterior-wise. Holes through every removable piece of sheet metal, minus the hood, but plus the cab corners. It had been hastily covered with purplish primer to cover the many rust spots and to make it look presentable, but I knew the owner and the truck's history enough that I wasn't going to fall for that.

The reason that I did the step-side swap was entirely because I didn't think the bed was worth saving, and I happened to find a fairly clean 1982 long bed step side rig in the junk yard, plus the remains of Dad's old 1967 C10. From there it was just "one piece at a time" until the thing was happy and road worthy. :)

Big Blue-Sandflix.jpg

I'm a firm believer in using what I find, and I even salvaged the back half of the donor's frame, turning it into a trailer with the leftover sheet metal that came off of Big Blue.

Not sure if this has anything to do with your "thread about nothing in particular." But I felt like tipping my hat toward your buddy Kenny. He has done some nice work.

Then I get a wild hair to look on CL in places like Montana or Washington, then I find stuff like this.

http://kalispell.craigslist.org/cto/5829949480.html

76 K5 Silverado, 350, TH350, body doesn't bad at all (By my standards) good interior, even with new tires, all for $1800 Or best offer.

Here that truck would be 3500-4000 and not much wiggle on that.

Then there is a truck awful damn close to the one I'm looking at now, for less than what I offered on the red one.

I even found a 4 speed Chalet for $4500.

Told ya so. Time for a road trip? Take that $2000 you'll save and you'll have plenty of money for gas...

I've thought about it, But I really want to stay within an hours drive in any direction.

I know decent trucks are to be had around here, but finding one at a decent price is the harder part.

Still waiting to hear back from him.

I wish that were the case here Martin, but it's just not. I get on CL or any of the FB groups and any decent, running, driving, 4wd is going for anywhere from $3000-$8000.

Examples, a fairly clean, 73 full vert Blazer, $8K

79 K20, 350, SM465. Needs tires, a clutch, and a throwout bearing. $3800.

76 K20, no engine, no trans or transfer case. $900

I told my buddy back in WI once that I should start buying trucks out here that are cheap and mostly rust free and haul them back to the Midwest and resell them. Looks like it would be worth it if I hauled a few at a time.

Can I try your places? I'm trying to keep myself in a few hour's drive in any direction.

Thought I found another, It has the wrong front end, but anyway.

82 K20, 350/TH350, $2000. Looks ok, but deep in the ad he mentions that the bottom end scattered and ruined the block.
00R0R_fWra3QD8TKi_600x450.jpg

Did see this one I hadn't seen before, 86 K20, 350/SM465.

Problem is, He's asking $6,000 or any "reasonable" offer.

If you bring back rustless Western rigs, I think you could turn an easy profit here. Our stuff up North is usually cheap, but almost always rusty. If you go sell stuff in Chicago, the prices start to rise.

Case in point, my truck came with the bed rotted out. One local guy (back in Iowa) had a monopoly on imported Southern rustless sheet metal, and he said he could get me a replacement bed for $1200. I passed on the deal, but enough folks are taking him up on it that he runs a full-time business hauling up sheet metal parts and selling them to people with trucks like mine.

This is the sort of thing that I would consider standard for my region. Some rust, some issues, but running and driving is worth $1200. If the truck was in perfect running order but rusty the price might get up to $2k.

For rusty beaters I'd expect lower prices yet.

Here you get some new parts with an undercoated chassis for $2300.

Oddly enough, I see a number of pre-'73 rigs (even a panel van!), but almost nothing in the 73-79 year range you specified. Ah, such is life here, the supply is so bursty. One day a matching set of 1-ton axles is worth $700 and the next you can't find a lone D60 for any price.

Now If I wanted a 2wd, or a Ford, I'd be spoiled for choice.

So I guess the guy with the red 77 K20 died, as he hasn't returned any calls since I made my offer.

Though I found this 86 K20.

Are you back to looking at square-headlight trucks? I thought round was still a requirement. :dunno:

That first one looks like Martin's. In much better shape. :haha:
I don't trust anyone who says that an 85k truck has 30k on a new engine. Who replaces the engine at 55k? My money says that odometer has rolled over. Though he appears to have enough paperwork to prove quite a bit. :dunno:

The second one looks like a tired barn find. $1000 tops.

The CC looks fine, but the ad starts out with "all factory" and then lists a crate engine and a non-standard transfer case. :screwy:

Square headlight trucks are acceptable, but not preferred, as It just means more work, since I'd have to put the other front on it, and then paint said front clip, and obviously I'd have to change it over the older style trim.
