Hey all, i was wondering, how many of us have taken the shell of our rigs and if it was ever put back on did it leak? (i hear thats a problem).

it's usually a problem only beacuse the seals have deteriotaed. Order some seals, take the top off and replace them. If you keep them in good shape, you should be OK as far as leaks go

Mine has been off and on , doesn't leak . I do however need to rtv around my NMO mount for my antenna on the roof , when it rains my cargo light fills with water

This may sound stupid, but I bought my first K5 a few months and can not get the shell off. I took out all the bolts around the side and around the cab. There were no visible bolts left to remove. It still wouldn't come off. Are there some hidden bolts that I don't know about? The shell around the cab would come up, but above the tailgate wouldn't budge. I may be an idiot, but I swear I couldn't figure it out.

Take off the interior panels , reach in behind the interior panels , there is a hidden safety bolt going in backwards , threads into the rear of the top . Don't put them back on , miles upon miles of driving without them , not neccesary :k5: :k5:

Thanks Paul. I figured it would be something as simple as that. I thought that it had never been off and just sealed itself on there over the past 20 years. I actually drove around for about 2 weeks with all the bolts off except those safety bolts and it never budged. But like I said, I'm probably an idiot.

What does nmo stand for?

My shell leaks but i don't have all the bolts in and the seal is getting dried out.

Mine has been on, off, on, off, on, off, on, off, etc... It is gone for good now because last time I took it off it started to leak a little bit...

Mine has been on,off,on,off,on,off. Now it is pretty much permanantly off with No doors or tailgate......it's a beautiful site:grin:

I never had leaks when I had the top on.........but then again we don't get much rain in Vegas:thinking:

I really don't want to Hijack the post, but the shell held up like $hit, the cab held up fair... but only because of the cage in the back around the kids. As for K5's having a "Factory Rollbar" built in to the cab... my ass. I cut it all off and there is NOTHING in there...

I have a '90 K5 and have never taken mine off. I don't really see the point in that I will still be under a "top" while i drive. If I had an older K5 with full convertable I'd definitely take it off.

NMO is a near-surface mount for antennas , mostly for amatuer radio stuff , I have an adapter on mine to CB antenna .

It is about the size of a quarter in diameter and sticks up a little over an 1/8th of an inch , just a little bit of threads stick out of the roof , and I can unthread anytime and swap antennas easily :D

Where is the it leaked before and leaks just as bad vote?? My top and doors comes off in May and stays off until Oct.

Mine is an 81 with factory seals and it's off all summer and on all winter not a leak yet knock on wood. You can get seals from LMC.com if need be.

Yeah i discovered it during the first rain... lol just didn't know what nmo stood for. Since i don't have the headliner i caught the leak right away and slapped some black rtv(all i had at the time) on there.

fiber glass warps over time and sometimes it just warps to much. thats probably why shanemcg45's shell wont come off cause its molded to the body. thats just what i think though
