Ask him what he thinks makes it an HD. I'm curious to hear what he says first.

Friend has an 87 1500 burb claims its a limited edition heavy half and wants 10k for it. I have crawled all over it and cant find anything special about it. looks like a halfton

late 70's thay made true heavy half trucks. but basicly it was 3/4 ton swaped at factory to help kick the trucks past emmisions requirements.

if i recall only 2wd and had 8 lug only with long bed only.

now that i think of it. i think thats what he called it, a "heavy half"... i will have to ask him more about it because this is a 6 lug shortbed.

on a side note it does have flattop knuckles dont know if that makes a difference i dont think so :dunno:

The heavy halfs were 5 lug, but had big blocks (at least as an option, not sure if all were) and turbo 400's. I think you are right that they were all 2x4 and log bed trucks, never seen anything else. Lots of people took the term and ran with it, seems like a good majority of trucks sold on craigslist are "heavy halfs". I think people see the quad shocks and think it's the HD front end or something.

Different generation, but I pulled my springs from a heavy half at the junkyard. It was a '95 1500 with a 6 lug 9.5" rear and 4 leaf rear springs. Basically just a low GVW 3/4 ton with the 1/2 ton a arms up front. It must have just been a way to use up parts, cuz I don't really see the point. I have seen on the 00+ trucks a couple "1500HD" badges too.

i just talked to my brother. (he is the one who restored it with my dad) he said that it had more leafs in the pack.

is there a way to check it by the vin? or any special numbers on the frame?

if its a heavy half its emissions excempt, would have a divorced choke and no egr, and also should have either a 6050 or 6200 gvw, at least the weight rating is true with a 2wd. I have several and have seen more of the heavy half ton 2wds, also known as big 10s, it was to push them past emissions and basically had 3/4 ton springs with 5 lug wheels. ive never seen a 4x4 version because most of the time the 4x4s had the heavier weight rating anyway and were divorced choke and egr-free. I thought it was just a 3/4 ton spring pack in a 1/2 ton.

I don't care what your dad calls it, that's a nice truck.

thanks. its getting to need another restoration lol. its kinda neat, my dad restored it with my oldest brother and then gave it to him, then once my oldest brother got married he gave it to my 2nd older brother and now he is married and gave it to me, im the youngest. i also plan on keeping it untill i have kids someday and give it to my first son when he gets older. :waytogo:

anyways the tag on the cab says gvwr is 6200 gawr front is 3580 and rear is 3580. its along with the vin so im pretty sure its not switched. the stock rear leaf springs are still on the truck with 4" block :doah:(need those gone) but they have 6 leafs in them

what he said:sign17:
besides that, my dad had a 72 gmc long bed 2wd that i believe said heavy half right on it. it was on the front fender i think. i cant find replacement emblems though so i may be mistaken:dunno: that was a long time ago.

I have a '79 Heavy Half Big Ten 2 wheel drive long bed that my parents bought brand new off the lot. It has more leafs in the rear and different coil springs up front with a small block.

maybe im going to have to call her the "heavy chevy" instead of philis :haha:

its just seems weird if this was a true heavy half why is it 4x4 while everybody elses is 2wd and no one else has seen a 4x4 shortbed.... makes me wonder if i have rare truck

Seems like in those days you could order pretty much anything. All that had to happen was to check the 6200 GVWR box and away you went in your big 10 short box 4x4. I'd imagine it's not incredibly common though.

would this mean its emissions excempt and no more emission tests:woot:

or does it just mean it wont have the smog stuff that the other trucks have

cali trucks probably are the exception, the rest should be emissions and smog free. All of my heavier duty trucks had no cat from the factory.
