I just bought a ZZ502 and I am looking for headers that fit the raised port heads. I called hedman and they said they don't make a set for it. The guy at hedman told me to call Sanderson. I ordered a set of BB8 GEN6 shorty headers from Sanderson, but then I researched the company and I am wondering if I made the correct choice. If I can find another set by monday I may be able to cancel the Sanderson order.

The truck is a 1986 Chevy short bed with Th400, NP205, Dana 60, 14 bolt.

Thanks,
Mike

Whats the difference in the headers you need to fit the ZZ motor?

Any header should still fit ok. Usually the exhaust ports are only raised about .100"

I wonder why the guy at Hedman didn't want to sell me a set of there headers.

He told me the raised D shaped ports is the reason.

4X4high have you ran a set of headers on a raised port D shaped big block chevy head? If so did you have to make any changes to the headers or anything else?

Thanks,
Mike

I was told that the difference is the ports are raised and the bolt holes aren't and the D shaped ports.

No, i've never ran any raised port heads before but knowing that the ports aren't rasied but usually .100" or so that will not affect header fit unless of course you already have a complete exhaust system and you don't want to deal with having to adjust the collector to pipe fitment.

The ports AND bolt holes are raised the same amount. It may have more to do with the D shaped ports than anything else. The D shaped ports sometimes require a specific header with a D port shape to them as well.

No I don't have an exhaust system on the truck. It is getting a new one.
It still wonder why the guy at Hedman told me no.
I will have to call back Monday to find out.

Thanks,
Mike

I don't know where your info came from about the heads being a raised port head. I'm in the GM performance parts book right now and none of the crate motors have a raised port head. Also none of them have a D shaped port.

Do you have any casting numbers from the heads?

My info came from the guy at hedman and another supplier of GMPP crate engines. I hope it was incorrect.

The part # is 12363390 the casting # is 12363391
On page 255 it says desc. oval alum. material alum port size 290 port type oval valve angle BBC Chbr cc 110 int valve 2.25 exh valve 1.88 Exh port square plug type standard notes semi open oval port.

I was also told edelbrock makes the heads for GMPP.

That head is a standard port location with SQUARE exhaust ports NOT D shape ports like someone told you.

Mortec says this about this head 96-up oval port open chamber bowtie alum signature series fits mkIV, gen V, gen VI 110cc chambers.

If this is the case do you think Hedman headers are the best?

I wonder who I could talk to at GMPP to find out the truth?

Thanks for all of your help,
Mike

I used Hooker Super Competition headers on mine.

They work fine. I did have to clearance the header flange at the head a little bit to clear the head bolts. But all in all, no big deal.

I called Hedman back today and now they tell me they have header #69110 that fits this application. I canceled the Sanderson order.

I orderd a set of the coated ones so I'll see if they fit.

Coated Sanderson's original price was $465 shipped to me but I asked if they could give me a discount and the discounted shipped price was $375.

The coated Hedman's are $335.88 shipped to me from Summit.
Is that a good price?

I called GM Performance Parts drivetrain devision, 1-866-453-4123 in case anybody needs their number, yesterday and the guy told me they are a semi D shaped exhaust port in the stock location.
He said all big block headers should fit.

I hope this helps somebody,
Mike

Just an update. The 69110 hedmans don't fit the ZZ502 heads, the ports are too big on the heads. A 1 3/4" primary tube header won't fit the ZZ 502 heads. The Hooker super competition headers part# 2817hkr, which have 1 7/8" primary tubes, fit real well after I clearanced them for the head bolts. They are made alot better than the painted hedman headers.
