The two nuts( all bolts are out) in the back that are hidden under seem to spin forever. Any advice? I have never had the roof off before.

You'll end up having to cut the heads off the bolts then either deal with removing the bolts from the top after it's off or just don't put those bolts back in (lots of people leave those bolts out if they run inner panels so they don't have to keep removing panels to remove the top).

It's not the two under that are bolts . I am having trouble with the other two nuts on studs and would like to avoid cutting at all costs.

I don't want the studs out I want the nuts off the studs, but the studs spin in place.

The studs I am referring to are on each side of the rear of the roof. They are underneath and each one is next to a bolt that is already removed.

studs?
6 long bolts across the front
5 shorter bolts along each side
2 fat bolts in back corner going up through bed and into shell

Which ones are you having trouble with? If something is spinning, and you can't get some vise grips on the spinning part, you are going to have to cut the head off and deal with it once the shell is off.

The only nuts on the entire shell are not really nuts, they are captured "nuts" that are attached to the bed rails. If they are spinning, put some vise grips or something on it to hold it.

If it's something different from what I've said, I think you are on your own.

I have 4 bolts total underneath in the back corners. Two are studs that come through the bed rail and have nuts with lockwashers. Two are bolts. All bolts are out of the top. It is the studs that are spinning. I know these are the last two because I can lift the front of the top. Maybe these are Cucv specific? The studs run up into the shell in the corner framework just a little offset from those fat bolts you mentioned. I feel like there is something about them I do not know and therefore am hesitant to start cutting.

Again I have a total of 4 hold downs underneath in the rear corner and two are nuts on studs that run up into the top.

And for everyone who thinks cutting is the answer before that step you can notch the stud for a flathead and put a bot wrench on the nut and hold the stud with a flathead. I am not at this point of frustration yet. Just a tip.

you have enough posts to be able to post a picture of this. Please do. On my shell, there are no such studs, BUT there are locating pins. Very close to the fat bolts, slightly forward of them, is a locating pin on each side. This is only a pin that is attached to the bed rail and stays on the bed rail. There are no threads or nuts, just a pin that falls into a hole and properly locates the shell into place. This is what I'm (and prolly the rest of the world lol) is used to.

It would be interesting if the cucv were different, but I can't see that being right. You may be dealing with someone elses screw up.

Have you tried leaving the stud and just lifting up on the back of the shell? If the shell has never been off before, it will take a lot to lift it. I recommend the "stand inside, back to shell, lift like crazy with legs" method. It wont slide out, it has to be lifted up and then moved. The pins are about 1/2"-5/8" tall. I don't remember how they are held in place, maybe with nuts. :) They don't come out.

I think the posts you are referring to are the locator pins at the back of the bedsides. They don't have to be removed to take the top off. I did make that mistake once, but am unsure if these are what you are referring to.

you owe me a cheeseburger

the nut holds the pin, there is nothing holding you back from taking the shell off :)

Thanks for the image. That is exactly what I am looking at. So that nut does not need to be removed? The gasket must be frozen in the corners I'll give it a good push later and let you guys know how I make out.

Can I post images as a free member ?

K85_Octane is right on the money. You don't have to take that nut off. That is the locator pin that centers the top on the bed rails. You won't be able to see it until the top is off. Here's a tip, once you have the top off if you put the bolts back in the body your capture nuts won't rattle around every time you hit a bump.

those two fooled me as well when i first took mine off as well. those will spin as you said. those are two points looks like bullets. there on there two help you align the top when you put back on that it. i had to lay on my back and use my feet to push up is was stuck so hard. but after that it went off and came on with no problems.:waytogo:

It was the pins. Thank guys.

The gasket was just a melted mush. New one in the fall when the top goes back on.

If you come to Boston you can get your cheeseburger.

Since I'm local, I'll take his cheeseburger, and then tell him how it was. :haha:
