I'm trying to get my backlash set on my new rearend and my dad wants to go to bed and then he's got to work all week so i really need help asap!

i bought a new made richmond excel 3.73 ring and pinion, plus a yukon LSD to go in my 8.5" 10 bolt from my '83 K5

backlash right now is at 9 thousandths with good carrier bearing load but the little book calls for two different specs for the 8.5"

they have a "new" 2 cut and an "old" 5 cut spec. the old 5 cut is 6-10 thousandths, and the new 2 cut is 3-6

any idea how i can tell which spec to use?

should i just shoot for 6 and hope to hit both?

thanks all!

my dad had to hit the sack so i settled for 5.5 thousandths. i hope it'll loosen up to 6 or so and gap the stretch between the two gear cut types. i also used the paint stuff but it didn't leave much of a pattern to interpret. hopefully it is okay since the pinion nut was set perfectly to spec at 15"/lb and i reused the pinion shims (the new pinon gear is identical to the old one aside from the missing teeth.)

we'll see:whistle:
