So the 383 kit I recieved I assume came with a smaller flywheel. The starter that was for my 87 blazer 350 no longer engages with this flywheel.

Can I get a starter with more teeth so that it will engage? If so what make and model car/truck does it come in so I can run down to autozone and buy one.

sounds like you just need a starter made for a 153tooth flywheel/flexplate

The 153 tooth uses a starter with mounting bolts straight across from each other.

The 168 tooth uses a starter with mounting bolts on an angle to each other (inside bolt closer to the motor FRONT).

why would a 383 or newer motor for that matter have a 153 flywheel ?

but if so yes get one for a early late mid to late 60's gm car like chevy II / nova with v8 .

or high tourqe unit aftermarket as thay come set with both holes in them to do all in 1.

Yes the flexplate this 383 kit came with was 153 tooth. So what kinda car has a starter I can use for this? The guys down at autozone are boneheads and wouldn't have any idea what to look for. They only know how to look things up by make and model.

I have no idea why. I oredered this kit and it comes with a 153 tooth. I didn't see any option to choose anything else.

Any idea on how many teeth the starter should have so I can make sure I get the right one?

You can put what ever flywheel you want on it. But yes, you need the correct starter for correct flexplate/flywheel.

Since the motor is externally balanced I think I have to run the harmonic balancer and flexplate that came with the kit.

Who knows why they sell it that way? The last small flex plate starter I bought was for a 95 Cadillac with a LT1 and it came with 153 tooth factory

Your right.

I just realized you bought a kit

So, I'm a little confused. Is your a 1 piece or a 2 piece rear main

Cool I'm gonna run down and see if I can get one that will work. Its the last thing I need to fire this thing up.

teeth on starter dont matter its the position to the ring gear on flex plate/ flywheel to bolting on block . thats why 2 diffrent patterns.

also make sure you run a tap in the other hole on the block if un used for years could be full of crap and cause major problems you DONT need now.

and also i told you in the post you even quoted mid to late 60's gm used lots of small flywheels in the mid size cars thay stuffed v8's in .

From reading the jegs description of the engine, the engine is Internally balances but if Its a 1 piece rear main it used a newer flexplate. Which all 1 piece engines have external balanced flexplate. Small or large. So a bit confusing.

Also the cool thing about the LT1 starters are they are a permanent magnet and smaller that the older 60s and 70s small starters.

I ended up getting one from a 60's nova. Problem now is the bell housing didn't fit. So I had to cut that to make it fit.

Anyone know if the make a bell housing that works with this starter and a 700r4 transmission that also includes the braces?

Well the caprice, Buick road masters, and LT1 cars came with the smaller starters and flex plates, so yes. Stuff is available.

Not exactly what braces yiu are talking about

I did check on the Caddy starter and they wanted $150. So I ended up getting the cheaper $45 starter. Maybe I'll switch at a later date when I get everything else worked out if I can find someone selling a cheaper one. Do you remember what type of caddy? When I looked for a 95 caddy two different models came up.

The brace I'm talking about is the one that goes from the bottom of the bell housing to the motor mount.

Do you know if they make a bell housing cover that works with the older style flywheel and these starters? That also has the holes for the brace.

So I went down and picked up one of those smaller starters for $110 and now I can get the brace on the bottom of the transmission.

Anyone know if the make a bell housing cover for this starter?
