Hello all,
I'm somewhat new to this forum; I’ve been lurking around for around a month before I got a subscription. Just to let everyone know where I'm coming from, I have some experience with K5s, may dad owned an 87 that he bought new and sold with regret in 2003. Since then I’ve been looking for a solid K5 around where ever I’m living, with a few stops in between. Now I find myself in South Dakota looking around and there isn’t much locally but I’ve found a few in Colorado. It’s at best a 5 hour drive to where they are, and he sellers I’ve talked to have either been vague or really helpful with my questions and requests.
I’ve used the tread with guide lines on buying a K5 in my requests for pictures and other information, so I’ve annoyed a few sellers with a laundry list of questions.
One that catches my eye at the moment is a K5 in the Fort Collins area, about 6 hours away. The seller sent me a few pictures and from what I can tell it’s in good condition and also sent a list of issues and upgrades. I guess my question; would you stake a 6 hour drive on some pictures and the sellers word?
Thanks for any and all help, I will try to post some pics of it ASAP,
Eagle0800

Also here is some of the letter he sent. hope it's not to much to read!
"I am not sure how many miles are on the engine. It was swapped out before I purchased the truck. The body has 91k on the odometer. It starts very easily and runs strong with no leaks. I think the carb needs a little work as there is a little hesitation when cold and you hammer the accelerator. Otherwise she runs well. There is some play in the steering, but it does not pull or shimmy down the road. The back rim on the passenger side got up next to a big rock and is bent a little. It has a little wobble in it going down the road. It is the rim and NOT the axle...I checked on that to be sure. A replacement rim would not be too spendy... I never worried about it since it doesnt affect handling or tire wear.

The outside of the blazer....not pretty. It has rust on the bottom of the tailgate, rear of the floor next to the gate and behind both rear wheels. The front passenger fender has a crease in it from a run-in with a tree and the door on same side has a dent that has been pulled out. The guy who had it before me rattle-canned it flat black. It is a Colorado truck so the rust is not horrible, but it is there. No rust on the frame tho.

It will also vapor-lock if sitting and idling for too long in summer. The exhaust on the passenger side was run too closely to the frame rail on that side and that frame rail holds the fuel lines. At idle, not enough fuel or air moving through there and she will lock up. I bought an electric Holley HI-FLO in line fuel pump but havent installed it...that may fix the problem....or exhaust will need to be redone on that side. It has dual exhaust all the way from the manifold with Cherry Bombs...sounds great.

When I replaced the alternator, I took off the air-pump and the hoses for the AC. AC works but will need hoses put back on to work again....sorry but I tossed that stuff.

OK...so the good stuff about it.

Newly rebuilt transfer-case (NP208)
New HD clutch, pressure plate and throw-out bearing
Remanned alternator
Replaced front and rear end with 3:08 gears and warn hubs
New radiator, belts and hoses
Replaced all guages
New stereo...cheap but works well...has a 400W amp and Sony Xplod speakers with box speakers in addition for cargo area Total of 6 speakers.
Replaced tires and rims with 33" tires...have at least 60-70% tread left. Big knobby mudders...super noisy on the hi-way but with these tires I can go places in 2WD my buddies cant in 4WD."

OK, here is some more info now that I'm home i can also post some pics, just got to get the 5 post thing out of the way.
here is the new info: 1984 with a 3" lift, 454 bb with Holley 4BBL, and a Muncie 4 speed. I'm sorry that this is a lot of info for my first post.

any and all advice would be great!
thanks again,

edit, you made a second post while I was typing, but your pics are red x's

What is the end goal, a trail beater, a roadworthy driver/trail truck, or a full on restoration project?

How much are you looking to spend to purchase?

How much work can you do yourself, body? mechanical?

This info can help us help you. Along with what year this particular truck is, pics too can be helpful.

My first impression of this truck, without more info, it's a 1000-1500 dollar truck. The seller states the obvious problems but I'm thinking there's more to it, like "the A/C works"? He took the lines off, that compressors internals are exposed to the elements and is most likely locked up solid now. That A/C does not work. He also listed the rust, again this is obvious, I'm sure there's more. If you're looking for a restoration candidate, this is not the truck to start with. Roadworthy trail truck, with some work it could be worth it. Trail beater, well it runs (most of the time) so should be good to start with.

Asked him what type of Muncie the trans is, from my understanding a SM420 or SM465 is what is most desirable in a trail rig. but then im not all that familiar with it, I'm used to autos like the 4L60, 4L60E and TH700-R4.

Sorry, I guess I didn’t say what I was planning on using it for, a road worthy trail beater first and a back up DD if something happens to my truck or the wife’s car. Sorry about the pics, I’m not all too sure how to post them here, I’m a paying member but I just don’t know how, lol

Post up here in your thread a couple more times and try again. You can link them from another site (little 'mountain scene' icon in the thread reply box above where you type in a reply) or attach them to the thread right from your computer (below thread reply box under 'additional options' click on 'manage attachments' this is for pics stored in your computer).

Pics for you.

Right click on the picture itself (not the thumbnail) and copy the pictures url using "properties". In the reply box here use the [ img] [ /img] tags and paste the pictures url between the tags.

Not sure what he is asking for that, but here are my thoughts.

Pro...big block, SM 465, tires look like there is a fair amount of tread left. Interior seems in decent shape, although I never liked red interiors.

Con...3.08 gears in 1/2 ton diffs behind a big block with a 4 speed. :doah: The only lift is an unfinished 3" body lift. Body is rough to fair at best, count on more rust than you can see and more than the seller even knows about.

I'd say Scott nailed the "fair price guess" at around $1000-$1500 tops.

That's what I call an either-or truck. You'll need to get rid of either the big block or the 1/2 tons diffs.

Appears to be a body lift on stock suspension. Could be decent for the right price. Mainly depends on what you want.

edit, Rene beat me to it...

He wants 1500 for it and its a 5 hour trip from Rapid City. the 454 was my biggest concern, I'm not familiar with them, a 350 i know a lot more about, i know they are similar but the hp and torque is something different in a 454. i was planing on making it trail rig first everything else second, so the rust doesn't bother me to much, I've been looking around the forums for ways to "fix" rust and what to expect with vehicles from this part of the country, I'm originally from the SW.
it didn't even dawn on me the 1/2 ton diffs with that big block, i guess i just was trying to figure everything else out and that just slipped my mind.
I'm still not sure what type of Muncie it is yet.

thanks tRustyK5 for teaching me how to post pics.

Have you run a CarFax on it? I guarantee it does not have 91k miles on it.

The rust in the tailgate bothers me. Have you asked him if the glass rolls down, and if the tailgate opens?

It also looks like it's been hacked, based on the household wire connectors under the dash. That's always a bad sign.

I would offer no more $1000 for that rig, and be prepared to spend lots of money keeping it running. Daily driver? I'm not so sure about that!
