So, a sheared spring pin wound up with my axle fully disassembled and scattered across the shop with a wheeling trip on Saturday morning :doah:

Steering was acting funny -- Turn right the wheel was crooked, turn left the wheel was straight, seen that before, sheared spring pin / loose u-bolts. Was both this time. Fixed that, and discovered that my caliper on the driver's side was seized up. Took it off, got it moving again, re-installed and figured I'd check the other side since calipers usually seem to seize in pairs.

Pulled the other tire off and whaddya know, it's seized too. Pry it off, and notice the rotor is able to rotate. Truck is in 4x4, both hubs locked, one tire on the ground, hmmm... Sure enough, my u-joint is missing a cap and the axle shaft ears are all messed up. So, off comes the rotor / backing plate / spindle, and out comes destroyed axle shaft. Oh great, the splines at the end are sheared off :eek1:

So, off comes the driver's side tire, out comes that axle shaft as well. Try to push a broom stick through the carrier to push the other half of the busted axle out. Hit something solid, push on it for a while, then it hits me, cross pin :doah:

So, off comes the diff cover, and with that comes quite the discovery, winds up this axle has a powertrax locker in it woohoo! Pull the cross pin, and get the other chunk of axle shaft out. Go to install the new axle shaft, and it just spins inside the carrier... Crap! So, out comes the carrier to investigate, and winds up the axle is a 30 spline 10 bolt. Cool, but sucks that my spare axle shafts are all 28 spline :doah:

So, replace the axle seals and back in goes the carrier along with all the driver's side stuff, but now I gotta try and find a pass side axleshaft tomorrow at a wrecking yard and rebuild / install it before I gotta haul my truck off to the offroad park on Friday evening.

So much for an easy fix of just replacing a busted spring centering pin! :haha:

Well, at least you found 30 splines and a locker. Last cover I pulled, I found no lube and seized bearings ;)

Better to be in your garage, when you find out that your spare shafts wont work, as opposed to being up in the hills.

thats better than what i found in a buddys d60. pulled the cover and found 1" of frozen mud and no gear lube and no inner pinion bearing.

Well, she is all fixed up and ready to go tomorrow :D Also got my rear brakes working -- Holy stiff brake pedal / super sensitive brakes batman!

Well it's better than to find all that out on the trail.
Believe me it's no fun when every time you push the gas the tires go left then you let off and tires go right.
Not to mention the other broken stuff inside the axle that would have left stranded somewhere.:D

Correct me if I am wrong. I read in post 1 that both front calipers were froze. In post 5 you got the rear brakes working. So were you doing the Flintstone brake thing prior?

I rarely use my brakes offroad, even when they are working :D But, that said, the front brakes did work beforehand, just that they were not releasing the rotors properly.

K5 did awesome today -- No mechanical problems at all, scored 800ish on the RTI ramp, and pulled out lots of Jeeps and Toyotas, haha
