Homemade canback top! (pics)

the top i bought for my truck uses ele. conduit for the support bars, pretty cheap and easy to bend

I used the 1x1 because it should be strong enough to hold the rack Im going to build to go on top of it. As to the sealing of it I am also going to make sides and a back that rollup/zip off. the plan is for this top to be waterproof as well. ( thats why i am making the top part out of a Sunbrella material.

As to my welding. I have to admit that the pic with me welding with no mask was a complete poser shot :D . I just wanted to be in the picture. also note the carfully placed grease on my arms and face this was done for effect. that and because its friggin a hundred degrees down here in the shade right now.

thanks to all of you for looking. I really appreciate it. someone told me when I first joined the site " In the end its all about pride and the work you put into your vehicle." that is soo true

thanks for looking :D

here is another shot where you can see how it is attached. also somthing funny that i thought of... Everywhere that I smoothed welds down and cleaned everything up will be COVERED UP by the new top :doah: ... makes me :haha: :haha:  .

Good job Gabe. I hope the Sunbrella material u use will be white too. i like that, it gives your truck a kind of 'tropical' look. How are u going to attach a rack thru the material to the frame?
As for the pose: if you'd put a mask on, we'd never have known!

Attaching the rack to the frame is what I was trying to figure out last night. we will see...sometimes my girlfreind doesnt understand that staring at the truck can mean your working on it. ( in my head )

ps.. here in Georgia we have red clay mud. it basically stains anything white like rust would :doah: . So I am going to have to go black with the top. ( I am liking the white right now)

Bummer about the red clay effect. I thought maybe you could weld extensions to the vertical posts for your rack and then you could 'notch' the canvas around them real close. What sort of things/weight are you going to put in the rack?
Is J&L your business? Nice looking shop and established same year as me!

Looks very good and you have inspired me to build my own wish that I didn't have a full vert though course I never really wanted a full vert anyway but oh well just going to be hard to do around the windows.

Very nice work! I might just have to copy that.

And as for your smoothed welds being covered - I know I'd be pissed if, after all that work, my $15/yd Sunbrella fabric ripped because I left a burr near a weld...

so true!

anyways i really like what you have done, ive been toying with the idea of a homemade one for a few years, and right when i was starting my tonnoe cover, a buddy gave me a rollbar very similar to yours... your idea is great.

for a good seal, you could use self-tapping metal screws into the back of the cab, and on the bedrails, and screw industrial strength velcro to it. then have someone sew the other side of the velcro to the soft top. it will pull on and off easily and should be damn close to weather resistant.

EDIT: just realized your in georgia, im in california, i dont know if you guys get a lot of rain there so that may not me a smart move, but we dont too much here really, and out here i could definatly see it being a possibility.

awsome!! i doing the same thing!

except mine is a lot smaller tube, does it need to be that tough?

mine will have a rack on top of it to hold extra gear. I always over engineer. It keeps you from having to do it multiple times.

ok its been a long time but the rack is done! I havent gotten the waterproof material yet so its still just a sunshade but here is the rack mounted up

sweet, I too couldn't part with $1,000, so made my own. I wish I'd have done it like yours though with provisions for the roof rack.
