Long story short I acquired a 1979 Blazer that was partially disassembled in 1982 and parked. I had it running and then tried again and accidentally hooked the battery up backwards (dumb I know, but I was excited to get it running again) and saw some smoke near the firewall. I'm assuming I fried some sort of fuse but I don't know where to start. Any help is appreciated. Thanks guys

You probably fried the fusible link wire that connects from the starter to the junction block on the firewall.

also check all the fuses, and continuity of as many wires as you can find. a buddy of mine did this and it blew the fuses, computer(late model chevy), and melted a few wires. Of course he hammered the lug onto the battery terminal because it wouldnt fit:haha:

Thanks a lot guys, can't wait to get the beast running again.

And how many miles did you say your drove it before you noticed the smoke........?

Seriously, what they said, plus you may have fried the diodes in the alternator.

Done that a few times :D Always a pain in the butt... Just gotta replace the fusible link and you'll be good to go again :)

What I meant was that I had it running and even drove it around my yard earlier in the week, but I always pulled the battery out.

Any idea what color this fusible link is, or any other hints as to where it is? I finally got home from school so I got time to look at it today and there are several different color links. I am new to K5's so please bear with me. Thanks

I can't recall the color wire but it is the only wire (other than the battery cable) that is on the large starter post and goes up to the junction block on the firewall.

im color blind so i couldnt tell ya. But i did this about a year ago. At first i thought i fried the MSD box. then i went through a bunch of other crap trying to find the problem. (wish i wouldve posted this same question on here first lol)

A buddy told me about the fusible link. I started messing with the wires coming off the firewall, and found one that was kind of squishy, compared to all the others. and that was it. I just put a butt connector in there. But i should go back and put a fuse back inline.

It was one of the wires that come off of the post on the upper part of the firewall towards the driver side.

unfortunatly i have done the same thing. if you fins the link you can cut it out and run a wire in its place. this is what i did...untill the rest of the harness went up in smoke then i just used a painless kit
