How big does the shock Need to be?

I started with Fox 2.0 remote resi and changed to 2.5 triple bypass remote resi. BIG difference just in the diameter change as far as smoothness.AND ALSO I started going faster and the stock bump stops did not work very well and I kinda jumped a little and it bent my axle then hit the rubber bumps and squished them enough so I hit my frame with the U-bolts. in process installing air bumps now but not after a spendy repair

Coming from motocross and lots of messing with shocks and forks I can actually answer why moving to a larger diameter is smoother.
Think of it like a leaf spring short springs take more force to bend, so do valving shims and the larger valve allows larger shims which also adds more surface area to distribute the fluid, so you can actually run a softer stack and get similar results. Now In SBD's case bypass tubes add more plushness to the areas where the tubes are located.

I think that's where I get my tuning ability. Can't count how many bikes I revalved and rebuilt for rider style and weight.

Isn't it crazy how many more shims bikes need? I guess the motion ratio is much higher but it directly translates, I'm really curious to experiment with two stage compression stacks maybe I'll have my cake and eat it to..
