How far do you drive to work?

Okay, I can't say I've read all the replies, but check this out. I live in Clover, S.C.(25-30 miles south of Charlotte, N.C.) I leave on Friday morning, drive 325 miles one way,to Richmond, Va., work my 40 hours(8 friday, 16 sat., 16 sun.) and back home in time to tuck the little one in bed on Sunday evening. Oh, I do get one weekend off a month(downside):eek1:

zero--zip--nada !!!!

My commute is ZERO miles!..NO JOB!!!!:(

But when I did have one,it was only 5 miles each way, to my first job I had for 5 years..then I decided to move back to my hometown 70 miles away, and got a job there..I stayed with my brother at his apartment for awhile, then my sisters house...but that didn't pan out,so for over 6 months I had to drive back and forth in my 72 K5, or 69 GTO the 140 mile round trip! every day!..

It was costly, even back then,it took about half my weeks pay just to get to work and back(if nothing else went wrong ,like flat tires,etc.--hate to think what it costs now to do that ride daily!:eek1: )..it was a days work just getting there, fighting the traffic, and hoping you didn't get caught in a traffic jam and be late because of it!...some days in the summer I camped out at a nearby state park, rather than drive 1-1/2 hours home ,and back again,to save gas and wear an tear on my vehicles..finally got an apartment after that!..

The other jobs I had here were only 3 miles away or so..the short trip every day helped increase wear on my engine(never warmed up fully) and mde exhaust systems rot off in one year or less...not sure if the long trips were any worse really,as far as vehicle damage...

I'm rather lucky here, there are 12 new car dealerships and a Wal-Mart,Lowes,and several RV stores with hundreds of big RV's within a 1/4 to 1/2 mile of my house..if my back ever gets better, and I feel I could work again,I'll probably go to one of those places I could WALK to for a job!...kinda HAVE too, with gas at 3+ bucks a gallon,if you want to take any pay home with you!...

I feel if you have to go more than 5-10 miles here for a job, your better off staying home, with todays gas prices, and fairly low wages here..if I were not single, and had a family to support,I suppose I'd think differently though...I can make more in my shop in a day, than a week of work at a "regular" 9-5 job..WHEN I'm able to do it!...right now my back has been so bad,I'm going to seek disability, and see what happens...:(

Nope, I might have an interview coming up with a company that is 32 miles from the house one way, would be the farthest I ever traveled for a job, but I need a job.

32 miles one way was the farthest I've ever worked from home too. It wasn' too terrible, but would definitely have been better with a commuter vehicle. At the time My jimmy still had the carb'd 350 and was getting a whopping 9 mpg...:doah:

Time wise I didn't mind the drive, but for me it was mostly highway.

I now drive 10 miles one way. Before it varied between 75 and 105 each way depending on what plant I had to go to thanks to the company moving

42 miles one way. Basically from one end of Santa Barbara, CA to the other.

Where do you work up here?

My office is outside in my driveway, from there I could go anywhere...

That's still not too bad though. If the job pays well, and looks like a good place to work etc etc etc.. then I'd say go for it. Especially if it's highway miles, for the most part.

About 2.5 miles, which is why I can still use my truck as my daily driver lol. I use probably a tank a week now, sometimes a tank and a half so I spend about $60-$80 a week on gas, but at least I get to drive something cool!

9 miles one way...mostly freeway though so gas consumption isn't too bad. I can sometimes stretch a tankfull to almost 2 weeks...if I don't do too much running around town on the side.

My drive is 10 miles each way, with one stop light on the way.....gotta love that.
