Not if you use flux core. Hell, I have had my welder for a year now and havent used any gas yet.

if you don't have fluc core wire forget doing any welds worth laying down.

with out shilding of some sort, gas, flux, or the coating on a rod, the nitrogin in the air with react with the moltin steel and it , well it will bubble like swiss cheese and will have as muck stranth as spit. you YES you need it. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif
