That is decent mileage all around, our 76 1 ton with a carbed 454 only gets about 8 average. You can inject that motor, our 98 dually with a vortec 454 and nv4500 5 spd gets about 10/15. Like trustyk5 said, you could swap in a diesel or do what I did and just buy a completely different diesel powered truck. I get about 20 average with my ISB cummins in my 2001.5 dodge 3/4. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
All those options can cost a bunch of money though and could buy a lot of extra gas.
