If you just thought I was dumb before, this will make you absolutely sure.

I'm in $5928.22 for '91 K5 that I have yet to drive. Of course that price includes a useless 14BFF and a pile of rust with a 700R4 hiding in it, so I guess it's not too bad.

On a completely separate note, I'm only $5928.22 over my budget so far.

In Denial

way back when I passed the $20k point, I quit tracking, it kinda put a damper on the fun. Part of this is R&D as you try different components out. Finally, no project is ever really done. I have a huge backlog of parts just sitting in my garage awaiting time to install them.

It's R&D for sure for me, but I always had limited budgets for fun so I learned to scrounge and dig to find the cheapest, closest to what I need and make it work, so I do a lot of R (research) and a lot of D ( development), so my $$$ spent are not high since I only buy used parts stock, I don't buy the already R&D 'd parts with a $$$price tag on them.
But I know this is not for everyone, my brother for example does what many here do: he works and makes the $$$ and then puts it on his vehicle by taking it a shop and having the work done.
Me, I like making things work and I am frugal, I spent more on tools in my life than on vehicles and parts.
I have about $40k in tools, that will be here for all the vehicles I worked on, I have spent about $15k on 18 vehicles including purchase and parts. :D:bow:

Everything on my rig was done at home, on a budget, by me and most of my parts were used. It still adds up over the 5-6 years I've had this project. I started with 1/2 ton, then 3/4 and now 1 ton because I broke parts constantly (even 1 ton I break stuff!!!) I didn't even tally up all the upgrades and lost money from 1/2 and 3/4 ton parts as well as the bolt on suspensions that didn't work as well. :deal:

I drag home freebies and super cheap parts cars/trucks and do alot of trades. Technicaly my old K5, I didnt even pay out of pocket money for the purchace price. I traded repo work for the used car lot to pay for it. That aside though, I would guess about $2000 into the K5 build not counting purchace price. I realy cant count total investments in a monitary value accuratly. For instance, several years ago when I ran my backhoe and dump truck, I did a job for a guy, and while there his neighbor asked if I could take away a pile of dirt/rocks from his yard. I got paid from the first guy and it took me all of about 5 minutes to load the neighbors small pile into my truck, and the neighbor gave me a 86 caprice classic. The 305 out of that caprice was the second engine in my K5. How would you put a value on that kind of deal?

My current project however is a crew cab and heres the out of pocket list for that.
1979 CC purchace $200
1986 chevy diesel (now a parts truck) $800
acetalyne tank filled $70
1 ton parts from my K5 $300*

Total=$1370

*my friend owed me $300 he bought 2 K30 trucks & gave me the parts for what he owed. That was when I built the K5.

Southern Massachusetts? Just wondering...:D

well I hate massachusetts!!! there isnt anything good about it.. I was stationed at Fort Jackson South carolina, and the south rocks so much better (as does mid west states, too) So im a big fan of the south.

lol, it doesnt matter how south you are in Mass.. you cant drive anything... technically 4" of lift and 33's are illegal there

Bought my 75 for $600 with no drivetrain. Purchased a Th400 & 203 for $300. Purchased a 78 for $500.00 removed the crate 350 and all drivetrain to install on the 75. Then sold the front bumper and the rolling chassis on the 78 for $440.00. So right now i have $960.00 rolled up in my 75 right now. I still have to get rid of the 78's TH350 with a cracked case and the 203 with adapter. So my total will actually fall a bit.

well,

i bought 4 trucks to make my project

84 1 ton 4x4 with 454/465/205 d60/14ff $ 2000.00
79 1/2 ton 4x4 runnin 350/350/203 10/12 free + gas to bring it home (NY to CA) so $ 300.00 (my first wheeler then i cut it up and recycled it and sold 1000.00 worth of parts off of it)
74 3/4 ton running 350/350/203 d44/14ff $ 500.00
79 3/4 ton gmc seized 350/400/203 10/14ff $ 550.00

plus about 10k in upgrades to make one pre-smog (important in CA as no one wants to own a rig they dump money into and cant just register and drive.) wheeler on one tons with a doubler, tires, etc.
