Hunting for a M1009

Decent, used condition, Banks Sidewinders can be had for ~$300, via eBay....

Turbo + Intercooler + wrench time = FUN!

What kind of longevity can one expect out of a 6.2 with a turbo on it? Any overheating problems w/ a turbo when things are slow going? I'm all about giving it a kick in the pants, but reliabilty's a pretty big concern too. I don't know enough about adding turbo's to naturally aspirated diesel's to even make an educated guess.

Well...

From what I understand,

Adding a turbo lowers EGT's, which is better for the engine's life.
Adding an intercooler further lowers EGT's.

Although, I do believe you'll need new head stud's.
I know I will.

From all the stuff I'm reading, turbo's are nothing but good for the engine.
Your trans. is what you need to worry about.

More power from the motor = more power to the transmission.

I know zip about Diesel so someone correct me if I'm retarded.

When you turbo a gas engine you have to becareful of/replace with a turbo specific head gasket (I have been told solid copper is the way to go) or risk blowing it out from the extra pressure. Would it not be the same on a Diesel?

In kit form, these things retail for $2700+ . . . can you get away w/ just the turbo + manifold? If I'm not mistaken, an oil return line needs to get run to the oil pan as well . . . can all the ancillary components be easily pieced together for a budget turbo install? Where's a good place to look for an intercooler?

They go for much less when used.

The Banks setup is non-intercooled I think.

I'd say build it first, figure out how healthy the motor is, and then if you want more power and the engine is healthy, worry about the turbo setup then.

Good advice . . . I've got no shortage of things to keep me busy for a while, anyway.

Yeah. Honestly I don't think I'd ever turbo my Blazer now and definitely wasn't going to do Big Ugly. Too much extra complication and expense.

I liked how easy it was to work on Big Ugly's 6.2L. Lots of space and room save the two HUGE military batteries. Why add more complexity?

Well, drag racing and hauling a 34-ft camper aren't going to be added to the Blazer's resume, so if I'm even a little please w/ the power output after the axle/tire installs, the engine will probably remain stock.

Do the easy stuff like a free flowing muffler and a factory style cold air intake and you'll be pleasantly surprised by the little boost you get.

Ever tried no-muffler w/ the 6.2L? I haven't, but I'm curious to know whether or not it's prohibitively-loud this way, or has a negative effect on power?

Wouldn't hurt the power. Diesels have such high compression that their scavenging is great unless the exhaust is just totally clogged up.

However I have heard that the exhaust is horribly loud without mufflers.

I had two Cherry Bombs on Big Ugly in place of the factory mufflers. Could barely hear a difference in cab but had a nice tone outside. Bolted right in...except for the rusty pipe. I can find the part number if you want. Nice little seat of the pants increase in power.

Did that and installed a factory civy truck style cold air intake to the core support and got another little increase. Not huge but was there and easy enough to do.

Yeah, thanks—I'd definetly be interested in the part # of the Cherry Bombs if you're able to dig it up. That and the cold air mod sound like a worthwhile investment.

Welcome. Still considering using them or a 2.5" version on The Blazer.
