I think the decision of having to make it a pay site or not is the responsibility of the owner of the site. If one has the spare time required to run a site on their hands and market it as required to generate funds or already has ample funds or a source thereof to offset the losses that may be associated with it, then it doesn't have to go pay. But, if ad revenue is not being generated, too much time is being spent maintaining the site compared to the costs associated, and it causes a distortion in the priorities of the site owner, then some justification must be provided. Off-setting revenue may be that answer. But whether it does or does not have to go pay definitely is a decision only the site owner can make. Afterall, that's why I participate in sites and don't run them!

NOTE** For any of you reading this and haven't voted, go to the thread titled "IMPORTANT POLL!! How much would you pay?" and post your thoughts about what you would pay if this site went pay. I'm sure Steve would greatly appreciate this feedback as he struggles with this decision.

I'd pay, but I'd also say to give maybe a 1 week posting trial membership, maybe under a single masquarade name. When I started using this site 2 years ago, I think I just found it by a search for "Chevy K5". I was using newsgroups then, and wouldn't have come past the front door if I had to pay for a year at that time. I also took a 6 month break from this site when I was between trucks, and when I came back, actually had forgotten about the forums...
So, ya, I'd pay $20 a year, but I really hope there'd be a new trial in to get more yungun's hooked. Maybe put a 6-month pay-to-unlock on a username so it can't abuse the trials...

Steve,

You've got the wrong idea. Those sponsors aren't what you need over here. Call everyone in Fourwheeler magazine and see if they'll sponsor us. This site needs off-road oriented sponsors, because, obviously if the sponsors don't get business from this site, they won't sponsor it. Most of Jason's sponsors are Diesel specific.

I got an idea (it hurts, make it stop!!!).
Make the membership fee an honor system function. I think you can add a column in the 'User List' that you can post the date a member payed their fee. And if you make it public to us all we can 'suggest' (or have a moderator do it) to people that they should pay. That way you don't have to change the site and ADD work for yourself.

I might do something like that, for a certain amount per year you can have "supporting member" under your name, maybe even whatever title you want in a different color text. I also will take some time and contact more vendors, I think I would rather go that route. Plus that would be easier for me to set up.

How hard it would it be to do something like this now? Until you make a final desision. I know it would get you some more $$ now if some members saw that other people had sent you some money and they had not yet. Maybe do a silver, gold, platinum member based on amount sent.
