hey guys have a small problem and need a little help in troubleshooting it....

I recently replaced my fuel filter from the carb, air filter and spark plugs.... since that my engine has been stalling a little, what did I do?????

:(:(:(:(

Extremely confused as to what I could have done...

It kinda feels as though its not getting enough fuel, or air, or vice versa, or any combination of the two...lol

Sorry for any poor formatting here, something is up with my computer or the site. You don't want a mechanics point of view, you want a point of view from people that know what they are doing. :) I'll double/triple check your plug wire order first thing, assuming you've got what could be described as "poor driveability". Do a good visual inspection of your engine bay as well though, make sure no hoses are melted, broken, disconnected, same with wiring, spark plugs, etc.

I have checked the order and they are good, and before I changed the spark plugs and the filters, it wasnt doing this.....

All of my documentation says to gap my plugs at .45, but all of my friends say that is too much, what do you think?

If the engine runs, it's not too much nor too little. :)Seriously, I've not seen where gap on plugs (within reason) makes a bit of a difference on a properly running small block. GM ran from .035 to .080" gaps on the HEI setups, so you've got a huge margin that you know it will work at. I'm sure it can make some sort of difference, but NOTHING you will notice in normal usage.

What kind of plugs did you install IE: Platinum or standard? If Platinum i've seen this cause issues on a vehicle that didn't call for Platinums. Also like was already mentioned, make sure the fuel filter is installed the proper way (correct flow direction).

check the gap on the plugs

check the plug wires. Ive seen where ppl have pull them off to change plugs and they actually seperated inside. Will be hard to tell

fuel filter could be backwards, but im going to go with plugs/wire issue.

also if your doing this kind of tune up, might as well do cap and rotor also.

The small block in my k10 was doing the same exact thing a while back... I did a new cap/rotor... then did new plugs/wires.... then did the fuel filter up by the carb and nothing really helped.
All of the stuff above was over the course of a couple of weeks... the truck would run ok but had a bad miss-fire and every once in a while would stutter off the line and try to stall.
One day I was coming home from work going down the freeway and the truck started surging and eventually died so I went coasting to the side of the freeway. I got it fired back up and eventually got home....
Anyways long story to say the whole time it was my mechanical fuel pump. I put a new one on (that was a process... stupid little rod!) and it's ran like a champ ever since.

This is why I only do one thing at a time. Plus it leads to more beer time ;)

Hope you didn't get any crap in your carb. Had that happen once, contaminated an idle jet and ended up needing to pull the carb off and clean it out. I so hate the itty bitty quadrajet filters...

Lets hope it's not that.

Check to make sure your choke isn't hung up on something, and recheck your timing. But them again......I'm a mechanic.

I have changed out the wires, checked the fuel filter, pulled every spack plug..(which are ACDelco now, and the ones I pulled out where platinum), and have checked the distributor, but when I was troubleshooting yesterday, I broke one of the wires in my distributor, so I guess i need a new cap now before I can continue to figure this out..... thanks for all of your help...

Oh, 1984 k5 w/350
