I'm on my way out to Colorado and my truck (1996 k3500 4x4 5.7 4L80E) stop shifting into OD. I was running it pretty hard (87 mph) and it was down shifting up hills and then it just quit upshifting. I just stopped to get some gas and let the tranny cool (I left the truck idling). I'm not sure what to expect, the last 20 miles or so I slowed down to 77 mph but it was still running in 3rd. I checked the fluid and it full bright and pink and smells fine. Any help would be great, I've got my wife and one year old some with me. I'm a little nervous about the mountains. TIA

sounds like you lost od.id slow down to 65 and run it in 3rd so you dont burn it up all the way.is there any check engine lights.the tranny should be linked to the ecu to tell it if there is a problem.maybe stop by a parts store and borrow a obd 2 scanner and see if it is showing any codes.

No ses light, I have a superchips programmer with me so I can check codes next time I stop.

hopefully that will tell you if soimething is up.could be anything.at least its not burning the fluid and leaving you stranded.especially with the family onboard.did you check the wires and all that?easy check if something is coming off or melted.

Do u know where the wires r that I should check cuz my truck sits low and it's pretty hot under there.

Well when I stopped to check the codes I had to shut off the truck and apparenty that reset whatever was keeping me out of OD. I'm truckin now, thanks for the help!

if the computer shut down overdrive,it had to have a reason.maybe it hit a high temp spike on a uphill climb and dropped od because of heat and slippage.it may just be a weird one time thing.glad it is resolved man.have a good rest of the trip.it could reset itself and come back again later.the wiring should be on the side of the tranny and going to the controller for the tranny lockup.could have just came loose from bumpin down the highway at 85.lol.who knows now that its workin.
