I think I have talked about this before.

Be aware this post kind of rambles, like I do so pay attention :D

So I have an 86 dually, doesn't run, no motor, trans, t-case, among other things.

I also have an 89 Jimmy. 6.2 700 6" lift 35s, its kind of rusty.

And let us not forget Horton.

So the dilemma I have always had is how to split money in between 3 rigs.

I have not been doing very good in this aspect of things. My wife and I live comfortably for the most part. But it really doesn't leave much money in the budget for truck parts. Most months it leaves none.

So part time I build roll cages, bumpers, do mechanical work, etc. Mostly on 4x4s.

This simply has not been enough money to keep Horton rolling ( those that wheel alot in the rocks know that you do need to spend some money on keeping everything up).

I absolutely love all these trucks, Horton is here to stay, not going anywhere. Its the truck I get the most enjoyment from. Its my hard core wheeler and could not be replaced or even close to replaced for what I could sell it for.

So it comes down the the Jimmy and the dually. I have a 6.2 turbo that I was going to put in the Jimmy. I also have another rust free body ( also an 89 so nothing is different).

I am really starting to think that I should body swap the Jimmy do the full vert conversion and paint it nice, being that this is more labor than money, then put it up for sale. See if I can get 4 to 5k for it. Might even try the ebay thing and see if I can get more.

It will actually be a pretty nice truck at that point but still with a non turbo 6.2.

In the meantime put the turbo 6.2 in the dually get it running ( I have nearly everything I need to do this) Sell my short block 454 I have been building, all that money goes into the dually, to help get it going.

Soon as I have the dually running and the Jimmy done, I would put up the Jimmy for sale and dump all that money into the dually.

Mostly on suspension, some sort of flatbed, tires and armor, as the dually will become my light duty wheeling rig.

I am really struggling with this right now, because not only is it a lot of work to get the Jimmy done but it will cost me some cash, and I could just be putting that cash into the dually.

I also don't want to put a flatbed on the dually but for light duty wheeling dually fenders usually don't last long ( my definition of light duty wheeling is probably way different than yours LOL)

What do you guys think?

WWCK5D? :D

I say use the jimmy as it is for what it is and spend as little $$ as possibly keeping it reliable and safe. Forget about looks!! Ditch the dually if there simply isn't money for it and use that money else where. Diesel k5s are easy to come by when the time comes to replace it and so are the parts to just keep it going. If you need a tow rig then ditch the jimmy and finish the dually but I suspect you'd be better off $$ wise to sell them both and just buy what you want, they do come up for sell all the time.

What do you think the jimmy is worth the way it is?

Might be simple to just sell it now,so you can start the work on the truck.

That should be a new sticker to sell on CK5 :D.

I like the idea of a wheeling rig and a good chore truck. Unless you really like the idea of spending the time on the Jimmy just to sell it, I'd get it going just enough to get some decent cash and spend the proceeds on the truck & Horton.

I have always had 1 truck and 1 toy, I don't know what I would do with out the truck or the other way around.

David I am using the Jimmy as a tow rig right now, not so good. So getting completely rid of the dually and putting money into the Jimmy won't work so good.

One of the reasons I kind of am leaning towards selling the Jimmy and keeping the dually, I need a tow rig.

Jimmy I could probably get 2k out of.

I might just fix whats wrong and see if I can get 2500 or 3k, it doesn't look bad just alot of hidden rust.

Problem with just selling one and using that money is its my daily driver. There certainly are ways around that, just puts alot more miles on my car.

It really boils down to selling the Jimmy to fix the dually, if I do that the 6.2 turbo will go in the dually. I can't afford to put gas in a 454 truck.

And no I don't need a cummins or any other diesel that will cost me a fortune. I don't have alot of money and realize that my rigs will always be a compromise. And no I will not buy a new rig, I have no car payments now nor will I ever. I understand the limits of the 6.2 and I understand the power of it.

Really leaning towards just ditching the Jimmy and doing the dually.

This...

And if you are looking to rid yourself of the 454 I may show some intrest, I will be on the road to eastern MT for a while though, but when I get home we can talk, being you arre not so far away. Lord knows I love me some BBC's. Burb may be in need soon and I may be able to build and swap rather than pull, wait, build and install.

All I can suggest is to pick one project, which ever one you like the best. Instead of giving 1/3 of your money, time, and energy to each truck, you can give 100% and it'll be a lot better result.

sell the rot box.. Horton and tow rig.. nuff said..

Fix the little crap on the jimmy, give it a shine and sell it. In the mean time dd your car. Sell the 454 and get the dually going, and then use that as your dd. Then you can focus on horton and just the little crap on the dually. Done deal, 2 rigs instead of 3.

sell em both and road trip to portland or soemthing. CC's are everywhere up there. pick one drive it home and its done and ready to go:waytogo:

I'm looking for a rust free K5. I would build you a kickass flatbed for your dually in trade.

I will sell you the rusty Jimmy and a rust free body.

I can build my own flat bed and I tend to have different ideas of whats cool and whats not than ( from what I have seen of flatbeds) most other people

Why wasn't win the lottery in that list?

Hmmm lotto, its always on the list.

I only have one car Adam so if I needed to drive it would be taking Kristle to work in the morning and picking her up at night.

You know Paul you are probably right

I can't I have one project that needs a tow rig. Can't afford a tow rig so its 2 projects:D.

Mentioned above to just buy a Cummins the simple answer to that is no, because I am in the price range of a 400k mile plus type of rig.

Motor will be fine axles will probably be fine but everything else will be falling apart

Bacon.

:)

Focus on what is most essential and makes you happy. The rest is just a drag on your time and money...

I was bummed initially when I sold off my 'Burb and old '69 blazer project. But now that I have a single project focus I'm making better forward progress and have more free space (and $$$) to work with.

THIS I agree with. I did the same thing. Sold my 70' chevy 2wd pickup, and my 89' 4x4 1/2 ton burb, only have my 73' K5 and 89' 4x4 CC LB SRW now. And my 06' bone stock 2500HD DD 2wd pickup.

I'm down to basically 1 project but with home renovations, and life in general... Man sometimes stuff just takes a back seat. For years.

You could find one with less than 200k for less than 4k in a first gen Dodge but your right about them falling apart even with low miles the Dodges just tend to fall apart and finding parts is a real problem.

Good luck I know what your going through for sure:D
I had planned to sell my Super duty due to the piss poor mileage but after this morning I'm gonna keep it. It was the only thing that would start this morning at zero degrees:woot:
