Does the key have to be turned to the off position?(all the way turned to the driver) All the screws are pulled out of the housing to remove it and the cylinder.Does anyone have any tips to remove it? My key got stuck to the run position and I busted it out trying to rotate it to the off position.

Also my housing seems to be getting hung up and I cant seem to figure out how to pull it off any tips there? I'm trying to replace the sector with the ignition switch actuator rack so my truck will start with the key and not a button.

There should be a pin to pull or push to remove the cylinder. But its been such a long time since I've done one, I can't remember if it has to be off or not.

depends on the year. 80'ish and older have a push in button, which works with the ignition off. the newer ones have a screw, but i cant remember if the switch is supposed to be off or in the on position.

I have a 1982 non tilt, If I have to rotate the cylinder how can I go about doing this? It's stuck and I broke the key out trying to rotate it.

I just replace mine Sunday because my key was about to twist off. I had to pull the steering wheel, snap ring holding the steering lock in place(bitch to get back on), horn contact ring, blinker mechanism, then a Phillips head screw holding the cylinder in place, then reversed to install. I removed and installed mine in the off position, but you might be able to to it in the run position idk?

Oh it is on a 84 auto tilt column also.

Try putting the rest of the key back in there(hammer:confused:) so you can turn it.

I tried to jab a screw driver into the cylinder to maybe pull it out but no dice. I'm thinking I need to press in a pin to pull it out. If I have to rotate the cylinder how would I do that?

I got the cylinder out, nothing a little WD40 wont fix... :haha: Also I would like to slap GM in the head for the sector and actuator meshing together... it's a miracle they last as long as they do.

I have a new problem sense I had a button hooked up to hit the starter I can't seem to find where this plug goes back. It's routed with the turn signal switch and ignition switch harnesses. I had a spade connector going into this plug I think on the yellow side.

also when the rod goes down the column when the key is turned where does it hit?

Isn't that the neutral safety switch wiring?

It might be there is multiple plugs on them but I have 1 already plugged into it and it's in the center. My wiring diagrams don't show anything.

Ok I believe I found where it plugs into on the neutral safety switch, it fits in there perfect even has the grove on the back side of the plug.

Next question is even when its hooked up and I turn the key to start the starter doesn't spin. I also have the ignition switch on the floor along with the neutral safety switch, does the rod going down the column when the key is turn make contact with any of these? If it doesn't, where does it touch or what does it do?

Sorry for my questions, my Dad can't seem to remember what he did and isn't physically up to looking anymore. I should have left the button. :doah::haha: but my OCD says to fix it.

The rod connects to the ignition switch that is mounted on the top side of the steering column under the dash.

ok I see it now, thanks a bunch now lets see if I can connect it and see if we get fire.

It started. :D

and now it won't turn off with the key hahah wtf.

You guys think its because I didn't install the sector on the ignition cylinder properly and its not making the rod rotate all the way back?

Are you sure you have that rod in the proper location? If its off a little bit it can make for starting and/or turning off a pita.

I believe I do, its located in the hole on the ignition switch then runs up to the actuator switch. The actuator switch is sittin in that notch on the housing. It does feel like it was binding up a little but now moves freely.

IIRC there is an adjustment on the ignition switch. You'll need to lossen the screws holding the switch then move it up or down accordingly until it works correctly.

Ok cool, when I get off work I will have to try it out. Thanks guys I really apprecite the help.
