I still trying to learn the differences in the axles. What I would like to know is this axle a Dana 44 and is it pre '76? It seems that people have no clue as to what they are selling these days and I don't want to get stuck with something that's no good. What's your opinion? Is it worth anything?

looks to be that way, they are worth less if they have the smaller u joints in em. otherwise as far as im concerned tomato tomato.

Hub looks like its missing something to me, like a dial or the cap for fulltime 4wd lockouts.

You got me thinking in my other thread about whether I really need a 60. I probably don't so now I've been looking at 44's. I know nothing about these things :(
Assuming (& that's a big assumption) that this thing is fairly solid, is it worth $150?

no, not worth 150, unless u really need it, but then u got to find lockout hubs thats another 100 at least, then if anything else is wrong... i bought my front dana 44 for 100, only payed that much cus it had 4.56s and i had a really hard time locating one with those gears. otherwise i can usually pick em up for 50.

keep in mind though usually when your looking for something, good deals cant be found. i would pay 100 for one if it was complete. the u joint thing, u really just got to know what size they are, but i think the smaller u joints were only in the pre 73 axles, could be wrong on that though.

Yep. $100 is the going rate for the proper gear ration axle. Expect to replace everything else on them too.

Yeah, all the Craigslist 44's around here are $150 & up. Most for closer to $300 asking price.

well i guess if thats the going rate. but like stomis said expect to replace everything, and on that one your gonna have buy hubs too, last time i checked hubs for mine, the cheapest i could find new ones was 100 for halfway decent ones on craigslist, my 44 is a pre 76

Tell them to get real. You can get a dana 60 around here for $400....

I wanna say I paid $150 for my axle cause I couldnt wait and it was the first one I found with the right gear ratio.

That's crazy. I have been searching for about 6-8 months now and for the most part a complete 60 goes for close to $1k!

**** that go to a wrecking yard and find a 10b with manual hubs in it... If you lucky you'll find a pair switched out to mile markers or something stronger...

I've got this style premium on my 10 bolt now.....

The pre 76 Dana 44 uses an external locking hub, very differnet setup than the 10bolt. Unless you mean replacing the entire outer assemply to the more common internal locking hub type

Yes, thats a pre-'77, not '76, 1st design axle.

Several giveaways:

External lockout hubs.
2.75" o.d. tubes.
Steering stabilizer mount on the tube is in the center.
Tie rod ends are "bent" and "upside down" when compared to '77 on up axles.
Disc brake caliper mounts are a smaller design with the dust shield.
Flat top knuckles on both.

Those are the main things to look for when checking out between 1st and 2nd design front axles.
