or is it warn's predecessor (whose name i can't recall at the moment). The open linkage stuff makes me think it's a pre-warn 8274. if it works, seems like it's a good price if it'll pull my blazer.

That's a Warn/Bellview 5721. The grandfather of the 8274. Just as fast and strong but no power out. However a Ramsey P8000 motor is the same size...

cool. thanks! is the only advantage of having the power out option simply for ease of use? so it's not such a work out when pulling the cable out?

Pretty much. It's not a big deal until the spool is packed full of mud and it's really late in the day.
Also the field coil is not set up to function as a brake so there is the manual lever on the side of it. From the factory those things were cable operated from inside the cab.
